Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 19hI can’t remember what I came into this room for but I just spotted an actor on the Reacher spinoff and instantly recognized him as “that guy from Corky & The Juicepigs” which was a comedy band from the 90s, so I’ve got that going for me 010
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 09/10/2026Our province and country are very far from perfect, but BC just recently made HRT free with prescription. I don’t know if *all* drugs are covered but it’s a huge step forward. 020
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 08/10/2026She’s now going through doctor-led steroid withdrawal, which has its own set of discomforts. But at least she has answers and is on the right path. Thank god we have an alternative to Big Pharma and all their regulatory bodies tho, right? 000
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 08/10/2026She audited everything that had changed in the last six months and realized one new constant: the new supplement line her SIL sold her one. She had started taking a full complement daily. And it turns out the whole line is laced with a type of steroid. 100
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 08/10/2026She was developing the classic “moon face” of Cushings syndrome - but it wasn’t Cushings. It looked like she was on steroid treatment, but had never taken one in her life. Finally the Dr tested her cortisol levels—they were at essentially zero. A common side effect of extended steroid treatment. 100
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 08/10/2026You know people that say doctors are in the pocket of Big Pharma so they’re only going to take natural supplements? Here’s a story for ya: A friend started showing strange symptoms a while back - skin thinning to the point of fragility, weight gain, change in face shape - like she was blowing up. 100

A massive, 4-YEAR-LONG study of NEARLY 30 MILLION people in France found that individuals who received a COVID-19 mRNA vaccine had a 74% LOWER risk of death from severe COVID-19 compared to unvaccinated individuals and ZERO increased risk of all-cause mortality. 5040621272

Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Don’t understand why seeing my favourite authors’ books on display feels so unexpected - they’re bestselling books in a bookstore. That’s where books live. It’s probably weirder for them to see me in their home. Anyways here’s @robertjbennett.bsky.social’s new A Trade of Blood & it’s delightful. 140

Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 28/09/2026That’s a great analogy! The whole thing really makes me question what they must be like as a person - to be so wildly irresponsible (overconfident? Ignorant? Any other number of things?) with other people’s lives. 000
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 26/09/2026It’s just wild to me - and I’m sure a lot of other foragers here in BC - that she seems to have used a single, rather subjective, ID point (fragrance) and really just ignored all other markers. 110
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 24/09/2026I grew up in the Canadian Rockies and I have never been as cold as I was in Iceland in November. Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 23/09/2026True chanterelles are known to smell of apricots- so that wasn’t crazy. The crazy part is deciding to ignore all other identifiers except colour. 010
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 23/09/2026As far as I know, everybody was fine the last I heard. Someone saw what she was claiming were chanterelles and drew attention to it 100
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 23/09/2026The discussions going on in the foraging groups were WILD A lot of “if you’re going to BUY wild mushrooms you should be able to identify them” like ok buyer beware but really?? 100
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 23/09/2026She smelled them, gathered them up, slapped a label on them and happily sold dozens of people poisonous mushrooms. She has now been interviewed by the CBC and has sworn to never sell mushrooms again. Which probably should’ve been her plan from the start. 210
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 23/09/2026This ID point was completely ignored in the case of this seller. The next ID point is the stipe, or stem. It doesn’t break cleanly - in fact you want to look for its ability to pull apart like string cheese. This was not considered, either. 110
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 23/09/2026In the case of chanterelles, the most glaringly obvious ID is the gills - they don’t have any. They have folds, which at first glance at a distance can look like gills, but if you look closely and touch them, they’re not. They don’t break when you touch them & don’t have a hard border. 110
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 23/09/2026If you know much about mushroom foraging, you know that many mushrooms require you to match several ID traits, especially if you are an amateur. Scent is a good ID trait for many types, but it should only confirm what you see, not act as the sole ID point. 110
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Armed with a mushroom ID book and a complete deficit in the powers of reason needed to forage mushrooms, she found a patch of yellow-orange mushrooms in her yard. She decided they smelled like apricots - a VERY secondary identification trait of chanterelles, which are considered a choice edible. 110
Jen @sheerjenius.bsky.social · 23/09/2026This week in local Facebook drama: Local mushroom foraging group reports that poisonous mushrooms were sold as edible over the weekend at a harvest fest market. The market organizer and stall-holder, a VERY amateur forager, decided she was going to sell mushrooms she found. 110
