After the failed assassination attempt on Hitler in July 1944, a joke circulated: “All Germany was standing in mourning at Hitler’s empty coffin.” (From Victor Klemperer)

Sorry if too much Victor Klemperer, but I love this. During the 1936 Olympics, Germany was visited by many foreign journalists so the Nazis dialled down on antisemitism etc. “Germany is supposed to be ‘like an open book’ - but who chose and prepared the passages at which the book lies open?”

Victor Klemperer and I seem to have formed very different attitudes to Rousseau. His reaction is incomprehensible to me (apart from the finding of contradictions which is fair enough).
The work on Rousseau makes very slow progress: the man literally sends me to sleep. I have now worked my way through the first two Discours and can in no way understand what is original about them. So many empty phrases, superficialities, contradictions! And I cannot even discover the famous poetic or oratorical force and passion: for every thrilling sentence there are ten tortu-ous, obscure, ponderous ones. And I find the Contrat social no different.

“One has to persevere; perhaps the pleasure is yet to come.” Victor Klemperer having learnt to drive and bought a highly unreliable second hand car, causing him great anguish, in his 50’s in Nazi Germany. But perhaps a more general sentiment.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme challenge is #BirdBuddies ! Can you find two 'different' bird species sharing the same space!? Here's a lovely Dunnock and Wren perched together on a bramble stem 📷 🪶 🤎 Alt. #BirdsInGreen Any shade of green on a birds plumage 😊 Happy Tuesday everyone 🕊️👋 #Birds #ECK
A vertical photograph of two small, brown birds perched along the same horizontal thorny stem of a bramble on the edge of a rural field. The background is softly blurred, transitioning from a warm, golden-brown field in the middle ground to a deep green foliage layer at the very top from distant woodland. The bird on the left is a tiny, compact Eurasian wren in slight side profile facing left. It features mottled brown plumage with subtle dark barring across its back and wings. Its short, pointed tail is slightly upturned, and a prominent pale stripe runs just above its dark eye. To the right, a slightly larger Dunnock perches higher on the same stem also facing toward the left but more with its back towards the camera. It has a more elongated body with heavily streaked dark brown and tan feathers across its back and wings. The bramble stem cuts horizontally across the lower third of the frame, lined with sharp, reddish thorns and clusters of green, serrated leaves. In the immediate foreground, and just in front of the birds are out-of-focus stalks of wild grasses creating a natural frame.

Reading Victor Klemperer’s diaries, 1933-41. Still in mid 1933, with Nazi atrocities unfurling, but he keeps going on about what a pain it is to keep having to ‘lay all the fires’ for heating and cooking at home. The things we now don’t need to worry about (braces for replies by off-grid dwellers).

Victor Klemperer, 1936, on those complicit with the Nazis.
If one day the situation were reversed and the fate of the vanquished lay in my hands, then would let all the ordinary folk go and even some of the leaders, who might perhaps after all have had honourable intentions and not known what they were doing. But would have all the intellectuals strung up, and the professors three feet higher than the rest; they would be left hanging from the lampposts for as long as was compatible with hygiene.

Gloria Steinem taught America that sexism is a symptom of a system that can be changed.

From the fight for equal pay to abortion access and political representation, she showed that progress comes when people organize, build power and refuse to accept inequality as inevitable.

She staged protests, established domestic violence shelters, created a magazine owned and operated entirely by women and helped build a movement that fundamentally changed this country.

Her legacy is the millions of people she inspired to believe that a more just world was possible.

She lived in New York for 70 years. We were lucky to have her. We mourn her loss and will carry her work forward.
