If you write a villain who your readers don't find absolutely enraging, then you're writing someone who just made some bad choices and could probably make better ones. That's not a villain, really. Still possibly an interesting character, but I propose that you make your villain 10x more annoying.

You want a character who lacks empathy or the ability to back down. You want the kind of person, who you've absolutely dealt with before!!, who will not fucking give in to a rational solution to a problem they've manufactured. Then give them power and back them into a corner until they're destroyed.

So to make a character who's truly hate-worthy, they need to seem like they could be reasoned with, but their behavior is only ever self-serving and irrational. There is no solution, and no compromise, other than complete capitulation to what they want. They see this as fair and rational, though.

To write a villain is to understand that, a lot of times, what makes people evil is that they have bad personalities and access to power, and you have to know how that escalates when they're in fear of losing that power. Most evil people are also VERY personable in different scenarios.

I'd just like to say, the villains of my werewolf story are hateable to the point that I had to warn people to not straight up wish Connie dead when she was pregnant in the flashback😭. I have no plans to redeem Connie or Tom, and I'll just keep making them worse ✌️✌️✌️

Went looking for another hard drive to add to my PC because my current drives for How to be a Werewolf files are filling up. I have space for either type of SSD, but alas...I was able to get 2T for my computer in 2022 for $159. Now, that same stick costs like $400+. Maybe Black Friday will help me?

Thank you! And I agree that it's not helpful for the reader, because that means they have to have read something recent that somehow also applies to your story, which it probably doesn't apply very well in most cases :|

I don't understand how the young adult market became like, sexy books for adulty adults, but maybe with magic or something. I was never a young adult reader as a teen, but it also was a market that barely existed in the early 2000s.

It's so reductive that everything has to fall into those patterns! I read books about teens as a young child, and books about adults as a teen. I don't see why every kid is marketed to like they only want to read about their own age. I have lots of young readers. It's probably good for them!

But the few times I have been able to talk to an agent to get advice, it seems like the idea of a werewolf comic geared towards adults, but not ADULT, but definitely not middle grade or young adult just...fries the system. Where does it go? I didn't write it to fit in lol

I just have no concept of what to compare my work to, and I get annoyed with the book market because it seems to demand that, rather than just like...marketing the book for what it is. It seems like if you make something big enough, it becomes what other work gets comped to rather than needing comps

Thank you!! I feel like there's a lot of werewolf media tbh, but I think there's a lack of satisfying werewolf content. It's a cryptid that's surprisingly limiting, because all conflict must be solved by biting and clawing. But I like bucking those limitations to find new conflicts!

Anyway, you should read How to be a Werewolf, which is less of an instruction manual and more of a metaphor for navigating adulthood and anxiety and complicated interpersonal relationships, but your guess is as good as mine as to whatever it's a mashup of. Werewolves with coffee, tho?

I don't know what How to be a Werewolf is. I didn't write it with the intent of looking at what anyone else was already doing. I knew going into making something about werewolves that everything had been done, so I just tried to think of what perspective was missing, and I committed to that.

The expectation of marketing your book is that every story must be a mix of preexisting franchises, with a sort of twist. "It's like if *throws dart* Seinfeld meets *throws dart* The Hunger Games, but the protagonist is *throws dart* Lara Croft from Tomb Raider." Everything must be something else.
