Hey, friends! Here are some thoughts on using planes in your compositions.

Text:
"Planes" are a depiction of anything that exists in a drawing at a FiXED spatial distance from the viewer, with each grouping of subjects at a shared distance overlapping the next in order to suggest the spatial relationship of each element in the drawing to the others.
This image has three planes:
(Image of a drawing with a scorpion on a rock, a cowboy sitting on a rock, and a mountain in the background).
Each plane in an image signifies a different degree of distance, with the foreground SHARiNG the viewer’s spatial plane, and the background being the farthest from it.
There’s clear distance between each plane; no plane “touches” another.

Text: why is overlapping the planes necessary?
(image: a cowboy apparently close to the viewer, one a ways back, and then a saloon behind him).
Unless one plane directly overlaps another, there’s no sure clarity that they are, in fact, suggestive of different distances.
(image: the cowboy appearing to be closest is shown to be a giant, swinging the apparently midground cowboy by the head into the two-story saloon that's only about as tall as a person).

it’s also important to suggest scale in each plane using subjects whose size the audience is likely to know. when that isn’t possible, try repeating the element-of-unspecified-scale (a) from one plane in another and have it (B) interact there with a subject whose scale is clear.

Text: A perspective grid composition (A) suggests depth by progressive recession in space, while planar composition (B) suggests it with staggered recession in space.

The principles of overlapping planar composition can be used with a perspective grid, especially if there are elements with right angles (like buildings).
Rough your panel with plane elements in place first...
...then make/place a grid that fits your layout...
...then utilize the grid to make the receding angles match.

One of the most useful* aspects of a foreground element is to create a sense of immersion for your audience. by putting it on essentially the same plane as the audience itself, the audience becomes a
part of the story, seemingly able to touch the foreground, to lean around it for a better view.

*it also means less time spent drawing all of the detail in the midground or background planes without ever aesthetically shortchanging your audience.

RAM, graphics cards, and hard drive / solid state storage for consumers have skyrocketed in price and are sold out in many stores. The same 2TB external SSD I bought late last year cost me $159 at the time, cost $449 a month ago, and costs $575 today.
Similarly, the general cost of consumer electronics is increasing as chip manufacturers and production lines shift their focus to building more AI capacity. The largest consumer electronics manufacturer in the world, Apple, says it is having trouble securing chipmaking capacity for upcoming iPhones.
Home electric bill costs have skyrocketed in some states with high concentrations of AI data centers, leading in part to a widespread, concerted effort by some towns and states to reject and restrict new data centers entirely. There is a fear among experts that similar shortages and price increases could come for water supplies as well.

Ars Technica: What is it about these futuristic narratives that is so seductive?

Adam Becker: I think part of it is that it lines up with ideas about the future that have been sold to us for many, many years by, among other things, science fiction. I say this as an ardent science fiction fan. I am not saying that science fiction is the problem. I’m saying that taking science fiction seriously as a vision of the future is the problem.

I love Star Trek. I don’t believe that we can build warp drive just because I like Star Trek. I also think that Star Trek isn’t really about warp drive. It’s about people and how we relate to each other in the same way that all great art is. It’s about being here now in the world and what it means to be a person. Yet someone like Peter Thiel looks at Dune and says that the message of Dune is “develop the deserts,” which is not even close to what Frank Herbert had in mind or what any reading of the text could support.

These ideas resonate because there’s this idea that the future inevitably lies in space, that the future inevitably involves super-intelligent machines. There is nothing inevitable about those visions and a great deal of reason to doubt them. I also think that in a time of great turmoil, the idea of a guaranteed utopia coming from these movers and shakers in the world, these very powerful, wealthy billionaires—it sounds hopeful until you scratch at it a little bit and realize that there’s nothing there.

I was asked to give my thoughts on generative AI usage in games - here they are!

"I think that until the bubble bursts, AI will be used by quite a few game companies, and perhaps even beyond the bubble," says Brandon Sheffield of Necrosoft Games, which released the RPG Demonschool last year. "Look, I am not a fool – I understand that AI has some uses. Primary among those being the devaluing of work, the cheapening of labour, the laying off of creatives, and the generation of busywork for humans to fix whatever AI generates."

"It's also useful for burning through water, raising the prices of RAM and chipsets globally, and poisoning anyone near the data centres that run them. So there are a lot of use cases for AI. From spurring on the death of the creative endeavour to dissolving our economy, AI is absolutely gangbusters at what it does. We don't use it in our studio though."

An RPG system where you have a set of dice (d10, d8, d6, etc) and assign each to a different stat. Success is a 4+ on a die roll. Instead of hit points, damage or failure reduces an appropriate stat to a lower value die. Bonuses, buffs, boons result in an additional die added to your pool.

I’m kind of flipping out over this thing. It’s a little shrine for your cat whiskers (or small flowers for normal people). I’ve only made 3 of them, they are pretty labour intensive, but they feel like a truly *complete* object.
