Starting October off strong with Cregger's Resident Evil in the cinema. FUN. And embracing the spirit of video game tropes, with just the right amount of tongue in cheek.

Right now the world is full of people who want to code and write and paint and film stuff and people who want to play and read and look at and watch stuff and nobody is allowed to do any of that because some unrelated third guy isn't making enough money off the deal

Well, I've been affected by the Bungie layoffs, and I guess I'm now looking for work. I'm a senior narrative designer on Destiny 2. I'm going to thread a little list of stuff I've done on the game; normally I go out of my way to avoid attention, but today I'd appreciate reposts.

Any half competent PR person would have decided today was a good day for a migraine. Clearly not what he's spent his £5m on...

You've been good this year - you deserve some books! And local bookshops deserve our support over the bald billionaire's behemoth.

Right? Hate to say it, but if he'd chosen a message and stayed on it, probably could have spun it well enough for his base. You get the feeling he was expecting an easy ride from interviewers and has been caught out by his delusions of invincibility...

Everyone should read this book! Otherwise you might get taken in by the Space Fantasists. Who have a compelling vision to trash our habitable planet, then blast off to be Emperor of some barren rock and a colony of their most dedicated boot lickers. And it has pictures!

Fair enough - I enjoy the national tradition of ridiculous headline crafting, but to be clear I'm not a supporter of what passes for 'journalism' inside. Don't panic, I didn't buy the paper 😉

The blonde fella's name is Harry Kane, and they played the match in Dallas. Also 4 goals is a lot for soccer, in case that's useful context.

Every so often, I'm proud to be British. Can just imagine the glee in The Sun offices when they came up with this headline.
Front cover of The Sun newspaper, with the headline: Texas Kane Score Massacre. Image of England international soccer players Harry Kane and Marcus Rashford standing on the pitch mid-match, during a World Cup game in which England beat Croatia 4 goals to 2.

I really feel for anyone teaching right now. My general take is that education will have to find a new approach to testing and assignments. But I'm also aware they don't have the resources/time/support for that labour, displaced onto them by tech idiots.

Elon Musk becoming the world's first trillionaire is beyond sickening. He's a mass murdering tyrant and simultaneously one of the most pathetic and embarrassing people alive. He's literally hoarding all the resources and making all our lives worse, while spending all his time bashing the poor

Well, yes. But that's just income - at the top, so much wealth is sheltered in assets, which can be borrowed against at interest rates way lower than tax rates.

I'm v new (<5yrs) to game dev. But wisdom that instantly made sense to me, and I now apply to all my creative stuff: Prototypes should look bad. Because the pretty polish makes it way harder to see if the IDEA is actually good. If it's fun with a stick figure, you know you're on to something.

Ugh, so gross! If it helps at all, I think the # of people who would actually use this instead of read your books is way smaller than the hype would have us all believe. And these companies will die once LLMs start charging actual usage costs. Still bloody awful, cheering you on for legal action!

Trying to think of dated references that confused (therefore, educated) me as a (pre)teen: - Learned what the Falklands War was from The Diary of Adrian Mole - Thanks to Judy Blume, was (pleasantly) surprised to find that period protection no longer required loops and a belt What were yours?

I sense it's largely aimed at YA(ish) fic from ~ 20 years ago. Old enough for pop culture/tech refs to feel dated, but not historic/'classic'. Probs a misguided reaction to 'kids don't read anymore', and weird assumption they can't connect to anything that doesn't match their own experience.

I'm okay at figuring stuff out, but far from a tech person. As far as I remember, all I had to do was put in my Gmail address, grant some permissions when they popped up, and let it sync. Anything sent to my old address forwards automatically, and the Google inbox is still there.

Men Without Hats: The Safety Dance
Alt: Men Without Hats: The Safety Dance. A man with devastating cheekbones swishes his long, wavy hair and thrusts his palms towards, all the while seducing you with his eyes. He is dressed as a medieval peasant - horses graze in the background. Text around the clip reads: We can dance. We can dance. Everybody look at your hands.
