Cat dad north of Hadrian’s Wall. Hillwalker. Probably “woke”. Sometime korfballer. Music, food and travel. And history and architecture. #NUFC North-eastern England. Late stage dementia carer. Like Reform? Passionate about flags? You’re going to hate me.

Very nice! I had a bit of time up there last month, which already feels like ages ago. Got to The Drift (which I love - can see why it’s so popular) and the walled garden next to the Pele has really come on since I was last there (alas no garden photos so I went for the next best thing…)
Cake!

The symbolism of the tree was so important for the region and it was terrible what happened. But sycamores are resilient and fast growing, plus what the NT have done has given it every chance to grow again.

This is the most massive sunflower I’ve ever grown. We measured it yesterday and we think it’s 2.5 metres tall.

he referendum, in which the village
voted to leave the UK in protest against the asylum centre, was described as "an example of democracy in operation" by parish council chair Tim McNally.
(McNally himself gained his role in May 2024 without a contested democratic election; Piddington has not had a contested parish council election since at least 2016, because not enough villagers volunteered to stand.) Styling Piddington as 'The Village that Roared', the parish campaign has been characterised by heavy use of Al imagery, an Al-generated
"slightly satirical magazine" called the Piddington Eye, and even a 1940s-themed Al-generated song, The Battle

Incredible that I only planted this lad less than three months ago. We had another sunflower but it blew down and snapped. This one has needed some real structural works to keep it in place.

If Sam spent time around normal humans he’d find that we’re just trying to get enough put away to get kids through uni and/or for a dignified retirement, assuming anyone makes it that far, what with an increasingly hostile climate and a maniac charge of nuclear weapons. Work to live.

Thankfully the korfball has been cancelled and yesterday’s extremely long walk didn’t materialise! Instead of yomping over the high fells of the Pennines we did a bit of a stroll along a bit of Hadrian’s Wall having seen Appleby Castle. The sycamore is alive and sprouting.
