With feminism on many minds today, following the loss of Gloria Steinem, I want to bring up Half the Sky, by two Pulitzer winning journalists. It's gut wrenching, but hopeful: an example of how community and civilization can improve when women are handed the agency due them. Highly recommend!

On the topic of both feminism and fgm, a "must read" is Half the Sky. It's not totally depressing. It reports some very encouraging activism and progress. There's a film version, but I haven't seen it. Given the book length and the movie run time, I have to believe they leave a LOT out.

Several decades later, I bought this ceramic tile made and signed by Lance Henriksen (major crush). It wasn't cheap, but it wasn't stupid expensive either, and I was working at the time. I actually cried when it arrived. My then housemate said she'd never seen a clearer example of Moe in action.

I've spent SO many of my 56 years on diets, doing exhausting exercises. However, as it turns out, not being able to afford food is actually the fastest track to larger eyes and sharper hip bones. Silver linings people. Silver linings!! (Fainting in public is the down side.)

I wrote a letter to Harrison Ford when I was 10 asking him to marry me. My mother pointed out that he was her age, and he ended up marrying someone pretty much close to my age. But in those days, just sending a fan letter meant you got a signed photo back in the mail. I still have mine.

Thanks!! She's a snuggle bug as well. She sleeps in my arms at night like a purring teddy bear. This is my other one: Lirin. I had zero clue that both of them were going to turn out to be long-haired cats when I adopted them. (Hard to tell with kittens.) My entire life is now cat fur.

Vet bills have been shocking in recent years. When I adopted Suki as a 9-month-old kitten (15 years ago), she came home from the shelter life-threateningly ill. It cost me $3,500 to save her life. But she's possibly the sweetest cat ever, and thanks me every day with her unconditional affection.

Top 10 when it comes to my favorite films! I have an original poster from the movie framed in my dining room. It came out the year I was born I believe. But it's eternal. My sister and I watched it constantly as teens. My dad referred to it as "that bickering film." But the dialogue is so sharp!!

My parents spoiled me for bday (24th) and Christmas, even though I don't deserve it. Lovely, subtle Good Omens bracelet, Good Omens sweatshirt (I didn't even KNOW they knew about my Amazon wish list!), a black waistcoat I'd wanted, British sweets/biscuits, and more. I'm so lucky in my parents!!

Lirin. My other fur-baby is named Sukiyaki Gavron Kimchi Catren ("Suki"). Her middle names come from the two people who donated to help pay her THOUSANDS in vet bills when she came home from the animal shelter as a VERY sick kitten.
