A great map with a meaning for me. Past the old eucalypts, near the last bellbird red dots, is close to where my family planted our big garden with many native trees from the late 1960s. My grandfather was a native plant expert + picked the right species for the area to bring back native birds.

The threats to our resilience are the same as the threats to our democracy: corporate lobbyists shaping policy, with dire consequences for our ability to withstand crises. Burnham seems to want to change this. But is he aware of scale of the task? My column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Guyon pointed out to Upston that in 2021 45000 ppl were drug tested. 0.13% tested positive. So what problem are you trying to solve, he asked.

They legislated to make it easier to fire workers, and now they're promising to punish people for being fired.
lowering the rate of payment for those who had been on the benefit for two of the previous three years, from 1 April 2028. There would be a smaller reduction for households with dependent children.

If you really want to get "more people off welfare and into work", consider not tanking the economy. That typically works better than performative cruelty.
The party also promised:
to provide "intensive, work-focused support" for 30,000 jobseekers who have been on Jobseeker for more than a year, with more funding for employment programmes that support young people into work.

those who repeatedly leave employment without good and sufficient reason would face a 26-week non-entitlement period, up from 13 weeks.
from 1 April 2028, the minimum residence period to qualify for main benefits will increase from two years to five years.
Upston said the party was focused on "getting more people off welfare and into work".

And there it is: voting for Opp is voting for National or someone not Labour. The fact he even engaged with the question - during an election campaign! - shows a breathtaking degree of incompetence that would be a liability if part of a coalition government.

Were some points where a single issue might sway some - and they might not be in either’s direction. Palestine/Israel clarity for one, though not many will base their vote on that. Energy policies another that could well harvest for Labour from all parties.

I was not going to watch but decided I’d been through enough similar in various work modes. The moderation - and lack of it - was frustrating at times, but overall it worked for setting a policy-driven public governance candidate against a power-driven manager with nil public-service ethos.

Also depends how the billionaire makes their fortune: creating good long-term jobs in a community of interest and high-quality products that do not loot the earth and contribute to climate change? Go for it. Making plastic crap and sending it around the world only to break in a few weeks? No way.
