At least 3 adolescents have now been mutilated for life by French police. One lost an eye, one lost their teeth, one kid lost a hand (the last sounds so violent, I cannot even believe what I am reading). Stun grenades, tear gas grenades, LBDs (blast balls), cuffs, rubber bullets, etc.

This pretty perspex model of the double helix, from 1953, was just sold for $614,400. It was made at the Cavendish by Tony Broad, the ace technician who also ran the X-ray crystallography set-up. I think they cost around £50 each at the time (a lot, back then!). Watson’s copy is in the CSHL archive.

NeuroFly 2026 seems pretty poorly organized till now and I am a bit sad because of that. There was an issue with the registration fee payment that has not yet been solved (been over 3 weeks), no decision yet on posters or talks, and the conference is on September 7-11 in Cologne.

I tend to forget how shocked many I know (including moi) were on discovering how weak liberté is in France. Sweeping rights of police to contrôle & shoot, no dedicated freedom of information law, and even things like restrictive naming laws. Hoping that true liberté comes in the 6e république.

LFI has possibly done the most lutte against racism and talks openly about it, but would still struggle to get a candidate like Mamdani elected, whereas their radical economic agenda would be as unelectable in the USA as an openly Muslim guy like Mamdani would be unelectable in France.

It should be obvious to French commentators that both the following facts are true : (1) a Zohran Mamdani could not be elected in France because of the lower acceptance and integration of minorities and (2) his economic agenda is pretty normal and not at all radical for France.
