“Oh, that’s the part that freaks you out? Not the vampire part?” He counted off items with his fingers splayed out against the steering wheel. “Or the super spy part? The part where I exploit and occasionally murder people for a living?”
“All of it!” Esper rubbed her temples. “All of it is freaky, Keir.”

“Okay Dracula, you’re a vampire. And I’m out. For real this time.”
Nia was about to reach for the door again when something flickered out of the corner of her eye. It activated something primal in her, an instinct that told her she was in danger. Nia’s body froze. Slowly, as if being very still could keep her safe, she scanned Lawrence, searching for whatever it was that had set off alarm bells.
The first thing she saw was his hand. His fingernails, which had been neat and blunt before, had extended into steely, talonlike points. Razor-sharp. Lawrence’s knuckles were white where he gripped his knee, as if he was restraining himself. Nia kept searching, eyes drawn upward. Lawrence’s eyes were wide, the pupils dark and deep. Like a cat about to pounce. Or maybe something larger than a cat. But that wasn’t the worst of it. No, the worst part was the two fangs peeking out from the corners of Lawrence’s mouth. His lips parted revealing a row of teeth, jagged and white as a shark’s.

“It’s your shitty dad’s bat.” Townes hit the unlock button on her keychain. “Anyway, what are we gonna do about Nia? She’s not gonna want to run away with us after our attempted kidnapping.”
