Metalsmithing Tips Thread #4: Etching!!!! Acid etching is really very fun! It's pretty easy but it can get messy so make sure you have your surface covered when you are putting the metal in and taking it out. Glass containers are the best option. You can get ferric chloride at Home Depot or online.

Made this delicious ground turkey and gnocchi concoction from stuff I just had at home. I sautéed onions, a whole head of garlic and some carrots, then browned the meat and added S&P, Chinese 5 spice, adobo and oregano, then let it simmer with some feta, beef stock, tomato sauce and paste.

Bonus jewlers tip: Stretch your fucking hands. Just do it. Every half hr and b4 you start. Of course you should stretch your whole body, but never forget the hands. If you Google "tendon gliding", that's what I learned in PT when I thought I was going to need hand surgery. It and biofreeze helps!

If you wanted to get into metalsmithing jewelry or small tinkery type things right now, the main things you need is a jeweler's saw, some metal, some sort of rotary tool, and a small torch. You can start off making jewelry with no fire by learning riveting and cold connections, too!

I miss teaching my metalsmithing classes. They were good fun. The one for beginners was the best cause you get to see people get real excited right away. Making a metal ring from sheet to finished polished product with a bench pin, jeweler's saw and a torch. No fancy equipment needed.
