Council President Shannon G. Hardin condemns the reported circulation of hateful KKK flyers near a Clintonville school and reaffirms that hatred has no place in Columbus.
Statement from Columbus City Council President Shannon G. Hardin on Hateful KKK Flyers.

I send my son to school each day with peace of mind, knowing that dedicated public school educators and staff are there to care for him. While I’m at work, they’re teaching him reading and writing, but also kindness, empathy, and the importance of standing up for others.

Today’s reports of KKK flyers circulating around a Clintonville school go against those values. That message of hatred has no place anywhere in Columbus.

I’m grateful to the community and Columbus City Schools for responding quickly and reaffirming that every child deserves to feel safe, welcomed, and valued at school.

We also need a set of overarching protections and guardrails enshrined into law, not just department policy, that govern privacy, data, and access across these and other similar tools. Technology can help our police solve crimes, but we can't stay on autopilot while these technologies evolve faster than our policies do. Council is working on legal and legislative options and intends to take actio in September.

These are the consequences of ICE’s inhumane policy of mass deportation carried out in America’s name, tagging our kids like animals and targeting our neighbors.

Of course we need to organize and vote for change, but we can also protect our common humanity right now in the face of chaos and fear. Check on your immigrant neighbors.
