The first song The Cheepskates recorded straight to digital in 1990. Kinda dystopian… I was in a bad mood I guess. #HomeMadeMusic music.youtube.com/watch?v=-g6B...

I watched the September version of the Eno movie on Criterion tonight. One thing that surprises me more than anything is how happy he seems to be. It did get me to thinking about something else though: when certain artists get old they go somewhere that is slower and more literal.

It’s more than sadness. Dolly Parton was a beautiful human being. We will all need to try to care and love a little bit more to make up for such a huge loss.

I want to talk about Spotify. I’ve released over 100 songs, nearly all of which have extensive digital distribution. I get “paid” for EVERY stream on Tidal, Deezer, Apple, Qobuz, Amazon and other outlets. Spotify has decided that less than 10% of my non-Christmas streams are payable. Just sayin’…

Sometimes you get surprised. I decided to spend some time listening to the Groundhogs (it’s been decades!) and while I remember liking them I absolutely don’t remember them being this good. Love it when that happens! Thank Christ for the Bomb is stunning in places. Will do Split next.

So I just found out yesterday that I might be a Canadian citizen? Both of my grandparents on my father’s side were Canadians and the requirements changed in December 2025 so that I’m now able to claim citizenship as long as I can prove the lineage. I’m so excited!

Started chronolistening the Hollies today. It’s going to be fun, and I know what I’m getting into. First thoughts are not new thoughts. Bobby Elliot was one of the best drummers of his time, harmonies are as joyful as can be. Allan Clarke consistently sings flat but it doesn’t get in the way.

I’ve been listening to the We Gotta Groove Beach Boys box for the last few days and it’s forcing me to think about how this period of their (and Brian’s) music fit into their overall artistic careers. I have some random thoughts to get out of my system…

Shane Faubert @shanefaubert.bsky.social · 14/02/2026

Quite a month for Beach Boys fans so far: we got a decent box set and a few hundred uncurated music files that just… appeared. As far as the box is concerned I have a couple of thoughts (not profound): 1. Love You gets better every time I hear it. 2. Adult Child would have been nearly as good.

Finished “All Her Fault” last night. I liked it but couldn’t help thinking that Robert Altman might’ve changed the storyline to give us a more satisfying (albeit outlandish) ending. Yes, I believe “Three Women” is a masterpiece.

In the 60s we had Beatles, Beach Boys, Monkees etc. and… Captain Beefheart. For over a decade. I just now realized in the 70s we had the Ramones, Blondie, the Cars etc. and… Pete Ubu. They deserve the same level of reverence. My goodness they were good.

Finally watched Swiss Army Man last night. It was really good and I’m still thinking about it, but aside from the movie itself I’m wondering how in gods name it ever got made! If the Daniels could pitch this into production they could talk anyone into anything. I’ve got some ideas…

I did rank The Bee Gees songs from the albums proper as I listened to them. Am now going to work the bonus and non-Lp tracks into the list. Then it’s on to phase 2: “Mr. Natural” to the end, which I’m not nearly as familiar with. If you have any “don’t miss this” songs from this era let me know.

Shane Faubert @shanefaubert.bsky.social · 29/12/2025

Finished listening to all Bee Gees material from the Australian years through “A Kick In The Head…”, including whatever solo material is out there. That’s 270 songs. I’ve always considered them top tier, but this chronolisten has given me an even greater appreciation. Simple and evocative. Amazing.

Another follow-up comment. The Beach Boys are set to have a box released covering the 15 Big Ones/Love You/Adult Child years. These were not their most commercially accepted albums, but we’re going to get them with some TLC applied. It can’t be about money, can it?

030

Shane Faubert @shanefaubert.bsky.social · 06/12/2025

Just as a quick follow-up: all(?) of Robin Gibb’s recordings done during the brief breakup were released. Barry and Maurice solo and the unreleased Kick in the Head shouldn’t remain disappeared. It’s good!

160

Shane Faubert @shanefaubert.bsky.social · 06/12/2025

Does anyone know why The Bee Gees catalog hasn’t gotten the copyright release treatment? Beach Boys’ previously unreleased material was a revelation once it got cleaned up and released properly. There are dozens of Bee Gees songs I’m aware of that need to be heard. I’m sure lots that I’m unaware!

New release! Two songs originally recorded for inclusion on a Bee Gees tribute Lp. Either I was too late or the compilers didn’t have room… I never found out the reason. Available on Bandcamp now, will hit the usual streamers soon. Enjoy! Repost! shanefaubert1.bandcamp.com/album/songs-...

Are there any independent agencies keeping track of everything that’s being destroyed by the current US administration? The rebuild is going to be a bitch at best, impossible without a coherent roadmap.

Have been listening to early Bee Gees the last few days. We all know how great they were vocally and the songwriting was outstanding. What I never paid enough attention to was just how good a bass player Maurice was. He should be in the conversation as one of the best of the era.
