@andrewhickey.500songs.com Elvis and Keith Moon both fatally overdosed on drugs that were legally, but unethically, prescribed. Daltrey and Townshend both seem to have been rather too public in their relief that they no longer had to work with Moon, whose decline was permanent.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com Episode 136 refers to Generation X and the Marlon Brando film The Wild One. An interesting follow-up is that Billy Idol later covered Johnny O'Keefe's 'The Wild One', which I assume derives from that same film. The Who loved Eddie Cochran, who's along the same lines.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com I had a brainwave that the two-episode day might be Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway; 'First Take' being the all-time great album. I only recently found out that Hathaway co-arranged "Choice Of Colours", so twofer could also be Mayfield and Hathaway. Am I warm?

@andrewhickey.500songs.com I had previously guessed that two simultaneous episodes would be Supremes and Temptations but your latest description suggests I'm way off. I suppose you could do their collaboration as one episode, discussing both groups (and presumably taking The Supremes to their end).

@andrewhickey.500songs.com I have doubts about the Ivor The Engine connection. The earliest broadcast I have found was 28.12.59, when Townshend was 14. He'd have been aware of the cartoon from the listings, maybe, but he was too old for the target demographic.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com If I had one criticism of The Temptations' catalogue, it would be 'Running Away (Ain't Gonna Help You)' from Puzzle People. It quotes "I'm gonna get'cha" from 'I'm Gonna Make You Love Me' but in a much more threatening way. One of Motown's most misogynistic compositions.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com Compare the bass intros to I'm Gonna Make You Love Me and What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted. They both have a heart-beat sound interspersed with a single drumbeat but the Ruffin intro is at a slower tempo. Both obviously just genius arrangements.

@andrewhickey.500songs.com There's a parallel between Pete Townshend and Sly Stone - relative optimism in 1969 but cynical by 1971. Other artists probably had a similar journey but in their own unique ways - e.g. Marvin Gaye, Nick Drake - for different reasons.
