Very true! Or similar-looking... I was asked to trace a man who emigrated to the US from Armagh in Ireland. After much research, I established that he was actually from a less-well-known place named Annagh. They don't sound the same but the confusion is understandable when you see them written down!

The will of Arthur Chichester (1563-1625), which was thought to have been destroyed in 1922, has been discovered at PRONI 😯 www.facebook.com/share/p/18JA... It is curious that this has not been picked up by other news outlets - it would be interesting to know more about the will. #IrishGenealogy

I know, and it is in Latin! It is because my great great grandmother's brother was a priest - he died first so the whole spiel at the beginning is about him. The upside for future genealogists is that his parents/family ended up with a fancy headstone. #AncestryHour

It sounds like you have already figured this out but FWIW... yelling on social media doesn't tend to make anything better. The challenge we all face is figuring out how to channel that energy into activity that *might* make the situation better. Granted, it's not easy, but we must keep trying!

It still looks grubby in the after photo because I had just sprayed it with D/2 Bio, which turns it a bit orange to begin with. I'm going back next Friday and I'm hoping that it will look much better by then - I'll take a pic to share!

I find the NYS site great for browsing if I have the date of death, less reliable for text searches due to the quality of the OCR. I notice Newspapers.com does something clever that is helpful for NYC research - a search for a street address like "30th" also returns results for "Thirtieth" 😀

I went to clean up my great great great grandparents' grave last year and, after much confused searching, I realised the headstone had blown over in a storm 😭 I arranged for it to be lifted and reset, at considerable expense - my family think I'm mad but how could I not?!

I am delighted today 😃 I received a will that includes the married names of all the deceased's siblings and their locations in four different countries, beautifully confirming all my hypotheses! I really needed that after a couple days of nothing working out on the research front. #AncestryHour

The two websites have always been based on the same underlying newspaper records (FMP has a contract with BNA to digitise their newspaper collection) but they were *much* easier to search on the BNA website than on the FMP website, hence they got away with charging people like me twice! No longer.
010
Shamrock Roots @shamrockroots.com · 28/07/2026
We literally taught people not to wrangle with the crappy search interface for newspapers on FMP - use BNA (no sub needed) to find what you are [were] looking for, note details, then re-find on FMP. It made sense for regular users to subscribe to BNA. There is no reason to subscribe to BNA anymore.

You have hit the nail on the head! I'm fed up of websites that host historical records being redesigned primarily to serve mobile phone users. The reason people don't do research using historical newspapers (or census records or birth/marriage/death registrations or...) on a phone is not the UI.

Shamrock Roots @shamrockroots.com · 28/07/2026
Nooooo - the British Newspaper Archive has adopted the FMP newspaper user interface 🙈 What were they thinking?? The reason people pay for BNA is to use their superior search interface! #Genealogy

I don't seem to have the new hints view yet. Slide-out panels are one of the most annoying non-features - I would love it if they were banished! Getting rid of the tabs would be a good thing too in my view - why were half of the details of the records carved off onto another tab in the first place??

I just received copies of New York parish register entries that I requested over 20 months ago - that's a new record! Don't get me wrong - I am extremely grateful to be able to access these records at all, especially from across the pond - but it does make project planning difficult! #AncestryHour

I have recently noticed a number of FamilySearch image collections that used to be freely accessible online are now restricted to FS Affiliates/Centers. I contacted them about it and received an unhelpful generic response. I suspect it is the product of some sort of review of licensing conditions.
