New substack about our new paper looking at how the impact of a paper shapes its retraction! @jevinwest.bsky.social @shahanmemon.bsky.social

Are famous scientific findings easier to retract?
It may paradoxically be easier to claw back well-known findings, since they’re the ones people like to talk about.

More than 50,000 submissions to @iclr-conf.bsky.social this year? That's more than all the previous iterations combined. This is after the limit they imposed of 20 max paper per author. With this rate, we will have more than 100k next year. Need better reforms urgently. #SciSci #Academia

1. Recently I’ve received lots of emails from people I don’t know personally, asking for my feedback on their books or papers. They explain the connection between my work and theirs and ask me to take a look. The catch, of course, is that the emails are transparently, obviously, written by AI.

But intentions are hard to judge, and my point and judgement is not about specific encounters of people or their intentions, but of a collective where this is a growing problem—no matter how it may materialize in words and form.

In all, working on science of science now (i.e. studying scientific processes) for quite some time, and having encountered multiple such instances, I believe that many scientific incentive structures may sometimes reward behaviors that are in tension with empathic recognition.

Being first can shape recognition, publication opportunities, funding, and professional visibility, so originality often carries real career value. Often researchers get upset if a paper they are reviewing did not cite their work or someone elses’ that was relevant.

Shahan Ali Memon @shahanmemon.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
Given how highly novelty is valued in science and peer review, it is not hard to imagine why researchers may feel a strong pull to be the first to ask a question, introduce a method, report a finding, or establish a new direction. And more than anything, claim all of the above.

Because AI is a relatively fast-moving field, competition is high on who was there first.

Shahan Ali Memon @shahanmemon.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
In my field that intersects a lot with AI, I have encountered many researchers with whom conversations about ideas often move away from idea-centric to “yeah when we did this a year ago..” or something of the sort.

Shahan Ali Memon @shahanmemon.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
I used “we are working on something similar” as a paraphrase/example for the countless situations I, and some of my peers, have encountered where people say something along those lines to signal that they’ve been there first.

Thanks for saying this so aptly. Institutions & structures shape us & we often come in ready to fit within the walls of the predefined systems, yes. Still we reproduce those institutions through thousands of small interactions & can try to resist them dictating or becoming alibis for our behavior.

Some really liked it; and some really did not. In my data science class last year, I chose to do British parliamentary style debates on topics of AI ethics—some students were furious and some absolutely loved it. Idk, I think experiments on low stakes is worthwhile.

I think this applies to science communication too. I personally try to give myself one “weird” talk a year, just to experiment and see how the audience responds. This year, at ICSSI, I gave a talk on the “Fiction Science of Science” and opened with a short act instead of a conventional introduction.

Sometimes it pays off.. but there is always something to learn. I remember Mor Naaman’s strategy of working on projects where he advises that you work on a high risk project, an incremental project, and as a second author kind of project. This ensures that you have a safety net to fall back on.

Someone often has to experiment at the edges before the rest of us decide that the edge was worth moving. Not trying to romanticize disruption or change. Personally, I try to have balance; some of my projects/efforts are safe bets, and some are provocative and (normatively) bizarre.
100
Shahan Ali Memon @shahanmemon.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
I totally see your point, and I agree: individual students can absolutely be penalized for being too different or disruptive. But I also wonder how often norms have changed because everyone first reached a safe consensus that change was needed. We are usually reactive, not proactive.
