I just used Chat GPT to write code that calls the Chat GPT API in order to generate more code. I'm both impressed and appalled at myself.

Anyhoo, just a bit of early morning appreciation sent forth into the world. If you're not going to conferences, you're missing out on some life changing opportunities!

3rd place is the feedback workshop @arthurdoler.bsky.social gave at KCDC. Amazingly practical stuff on giving and receiving feedback that has made a huge impact on my career as a leader. (In fact, this thread was inspired by the process of reflecting on & unpacking feedback I'd received recently!)

2nd place is the speakers workshop by Josh Holmes at #codemash a year or two later. He said that you have 60 seconds to lock in the audience's attention, so skip the "about me" slide and come out swinging. Demonstrate your bona fides through stories and confidence. I follow that advice religiously.

1st place is the guy who wasted my time at #codemash so many years ago. I had paid $600 of my own money to attend & he gave a half-assed 30 minute talk. I was so pissed that I paid to attend & he was there for free that I was motivated to submit next year, got accepted, and began my speaking career

Was reflecting this morning on the three most impactful conference sessions I've been to over the years and thought I'd push my appreciation out into the ether. So here goes....

My new home automation concept is a sensor that detects a door opening within 10 seconds of a toilet flushing and announces WASH YOUR HANDS in a loud voice. I think they'd sell like gangbusters to parents

I'm feeling pretty good about this #codemash session on authentication. I've continued to tighten it up and have made some significant improvements since Momentum. I think it's really solid. So, I look forward to the day after CodeMash when I suddenly realize all the ways it still sucks...

AI: "You're trying to implement a complex algorithm in an unfamiliar programming language, using random types you described in poorly written English? I got you, boo." Also AI: "You'd like me to create a story problem illustrating a simple 6th grade math equation? Allow me to show my ass a bit..."

Me, in the summer: I'm gonna submit talks I've already written to #codemash, so that I can spend December chilling out and not stressing over prep. Me in early December: this talk is garbage, I'd better overhaul it. Me in late December (probably): that was stupid

Shout-out to the guy at my @momentumdevcon session who asked a question that momentarily stumped me. You, sir, are the impetus for a few new slides that will make it into my CodeMash deck. Gonna go ahead and clear up that confusion head-on.

Been studying nosql one-table design patterns as I prepare to start our first cloud-native project. I think I get it, lay things out in NoSQL Workbench, and then try explaining it to someone and realize nope, I still don't totally get it. Getting closer though.

It used to be that Windows was frequently unstable and rebooting fixed everything. These days, my computer runs perfectly stable UNTIL I reboot, at which time Bluetooth, camera, and audio settings randomly change or devices stop working. Forced nightly windows updates are great fun.

Also, consider engaging a resume consultant. My wife used one recently when leaving a job she'd held for 15 years. Fee of 2500, I think, covered resume, social (eg LinkedIn review), and 4 mock interview sessions for practice. She had great results, but of course YMMV

I'd be happy to review your friend's resume and cover letter template if the opinion of some rando from the Internet would be useful. I don't claim to be an expert but I've interviewed probably 100 people at this point, FWIW

If you: 1) Use an editor like Confluence 2) Leave documents in edit mode while you step away from your desk 3) Find random "asdfasdfghadsgfa" type garbage in your documents at some point in the future ... then you might have a cat.

As a hiring manager I always appreciate a cover letter, especially if it's tailored to my company and protectively addresses potential concerns like this. What have they done to refresh their skills, how quickly could they get back into the grind, etc

1st session at #Momentum makes me think of how poor the UX is of the elevator at the Holiday Inn I'm staying at. You have to scan your room card to choose a floor. When you scan it you get a green light. But when you choose a floor, it lights up red. I thought my floor selection was invalid...

Statistically, I think LEAST is one of the best. I used ADIEU for awhile, but settled on LEAST as being pretty solid. Just gotta watch out for hitting a __A_E pattern on guess 2, at least on hard mode, because you can get stuck with too many possible words and not enough guesses to try them all
