we literally root for charlie brown every step of the way, he is the main character the show has told us to love. he is who we want to see win. and then when lucy pulls the football away, the show is telling us it does not respect our time as a viewer.

I got into a coffee-shop conversation with a few people about what we were reading, and a guy apologized because he was reading Infinite Jest and therefore being "performative". I told him that the idea of the "performative male" is a right-wing idea meant to police gender. I hope he believed me.

it's not a bad idea to have a genre name for whatever art style is "looks like a magic: the gathering card on the more cartoony side". i just don't think "stylized" is a good name for it.

you will watch someone talk about how to do something with an art program and they will say "depending on if you want to do stylized or realistic" as if those are the two options

sertia @sertiaa.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
sometimes stylized seems to mean "vaguely between disney, arcane, and world of warcraft". but sometimes not at all? and sometimes it means anime?

"stylized" as a shorthand term in commercial illustration and animation/game art is confusing to me. every drawing is stylized. it basically can't not be. and also, which style? there are infinite of those.

The new community guidelines are highly censorious. You should be concerned about user drop off if these rules do apply. Can you please amend your community guidelines to allow role playing, creative/artistic expression and remove anything about “promoting unsafe behavior?” Intent is not obvious.

1. The Cardinal Directions
1. Safety First. We do not allow content that shows or promotes violence or harm-to adults, children, or animals. Do not violate anyone's privacy or share their personal information.
2. Respect Others. We do not allow content that promotes or that is hate speech, harassment, bullying, or discrimination.
3. Be Authentic. We do not allow content intended to misrepresent, defraud, trick, deceive, or mislead.
4. Follow the Rules. We do not allow content that is illegal. This includes content that is prohibited by laws about online content, intellectual property, copyright, trade, commerce, cybersecurity, data protection. Do not try to avoid our moderation controls, either.
If you violate these Guidelines, we may hide, remove or label your content, or we may suspend or terminate your account, permanently ban you from the platform, or-in extreme cases make a report to the appropriate authorities.
2. Safety First
1. Do not glorify violence or harm. For example, do not post content that:
1. Depicts or Encourages Violence or Abuse:
Includes violence or threats against others, intimate partner abuse, or harm to animals.

fwiw this is what I submitted, but please don't just take my word for it and see what you think of the guidelines for yourself
I have concerns over the possible restriction and banning of certain content depicting fictional characters. There is some language within the guidelines that either seems to indicate this will be the case or is ambiguous enough to be interpreted this way.

As an example, guideline 2.C.ii. states that depictions of violence and sensitive topics in art and fiction are permissible unless they glorify harm. However, if the harm being depicted only affects fictional people, this is not something that should be restricted. A rule like this could be understood to mean that anything from artistic gore to fandom "whump" to discussion of popular violent action movies would violate these terms.

There is similar unclear and concerning language in various places throughout the text. Guideline 5 is another prominent example, stating in 5.A.ii.d. that users must not share "real or SYNTHETIC intimate images or sexual content" (emphasis mine). This seems to imply that creative works containing sexual content are not allowed, even if they and the people depicted are entirely fictional. Guideline 5.B.i. further specifies that "consensual adult content" is allowed. Does it then follow that purely fictional art or creative writing that includes non-consensual sexual contact between imaginary characters would be in violation of the Community Guidelines? If this is the case, I strongly object to this kind of censorship and overreach, as it's neither illegal nor harmful to share this type of content when properly labeled, and I disagree with the need for Bluesky to restrict posts of this nature.

Does fatal vore art glorify violence/harm? Does a slasher movie glorify violence/harm? Does an action movie glorify violence/harm? Does the video game Doom glorify violence/harm? Does the video game Wolfenstein glorify violence/harm? What's the actual standard here?

Bluesky's new TOS includes a few new phrases that either weren't present in the original or that are rephrased. Just to make 100% sure that I understand: if I share a video clip of John Wick, does that violate this policy by glorifying violence/harm? bsky.social/about/suppor... #SaveArt #Bluesky

Wow we’re having “games are art” discourse again! Just gonna leave this here. From my dissertation:
2.1 Lenses, Not Boxes
I wondered whether this section was necessary, but games discourse seems to repeatedly find itself adrift in questions of whether _ counts as a _. We have seen
the question repeatedly: Do games count as art? Do games without goals count as games? Is The Sims a game? Are hypertexts interactive fiction? Are
Twine pieces literature? In fairness to the researchers cited here, all of whom I respect immensely, many of these sources pose or imply the question rhetorically. Still, the necessity of such a framing frustrates me.
"Is _ a _?" is, in my opinion, a fruitless question. The question can never be answered to anyone's satisfaction, and it often serves as either a provocation
to espouse politics or as a cover to institute gatekeeping. Its agenda is usually opaque
to onlookers and bewildering to those trying to advance the field from across disciplines.
We should be thinking in lenses, not boxes.
It is always more interesting to ask "If we think of _ through the lens of _, what do we learn?" We know it is more interesting to ask "What do we learn
by considering Tom Stoppard through the lens of poststructuralism?" than to ask "Is Stoppard's work poststructuralist?" And while some works may be more or less fruitful when examined through different lenses, sometimes the most unlikely pairings of lenses and objects are the most rewarding. Certainly any of the questions above would be much better served by reframing them in this way.
