Most discussions about “misinformation” treat the problem as if people simply don’t have good enough critical-thinking skills. It sounds intuitive, but it’s not entirely accurate. The problem isn’t just individual ignorance, it’s the structure of the information environment people are placed into.

Totally. The concept of communities as moats always felt quite simplistic and extractive for me, rather than seeing them as pathways to and from mutual connection.

We need a different approach to how we build communities of circumstance. Do you work for a nonprofit, a health or carers organisation, or run peer support programmes? You're not alone. I've spent over a decade building and leading this type of community. Follow for insight and ideas.

I've been working with communities of circumstance for over a decade. Very little has been written about them. The people building them are too busy to talk about their work. The problem is, they're still using the standard community building approach that doesn't work. 2/3

Are you building a community of circumstance without realising it? Communities of circumstance are for people who need a place to connect because life happened in ways they didn't choose. I developed that definition because I couldn't find a working definition anywhere. 1/3

Still seeing jobs in the charity sector that 'reserve the right to close applications early' That's likely to lead to indirect discrimination against people with chronic illnesses, parents, caregivers, and people with long commutes or long work hours. Give. People. Time. Make. Recruitment. Fair.

Depending on policy and unless there's reasons not to allow a prisoner contact with loved ones, human rights needs would lead me to thinking that this could be unsafe or unethical. Regardless of the crime, basic dignity and needs are important otherwise prisons become places of tyranny.

This is not misinformation. That's what I normally cover - something out of context, an opinion quoted as fact, or a deliberate misinterpretation... This is none of those. This is full-on disinformation. Because that is NOT from the Express. It is entirely fake😱 🧵 1/10
Lembit Opik tweet:

Burnham's big migration plan: take 4,000 stranded migrants from Ceuta, bring them to the UK and put them up in luxury hotels. Americans look at Europe in despair.

Express Headline: Burnham's migrant, Campbell, 1,000 stranded in Ceuta to be brought to UK. The Prime Minister proposes flying thousands of stranded migrants from Spanish enclave to Britain and housing them in London hotels.

Hearing some disappointing examples of distant and uncaring, toxic and unpleasant, or controlling and nitpicking management styles in the charity sector at the moment. It takes time and effort to manage in a constructive and situational way. But the alternatives will hurt you and your team.

Twice this week, the water butt has been refilled by the rain showers. So we're now playing the game of using the water ahead of the next shower to avoid damp. And watching to see if the grass is actually returning to it's usual soft green state. This is summer #ukweather that I'm used to!

Hmm, I'd suspect it's likely due to selection bias and who is actually engaging and seeing content. Similar filter bubbles happen on other social platforms too, it's just the core user base is more similar on those two platforms. I think the bigger fantasy is the idea of the global market square...

If you only read one article about Jason Arday, let it be this one. And let's stop talking about Arday (aside from tributes, support and calls to correct the record) and start talking about Nathan Cofnas and the agenda that led to this horrible situation.

Serena Snoad - Good Community @serenas.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Shall we start talking about Nathan Cofnas and the agenda that surrounds him instead? I think that would be wise...

Serena Snoad - Good Community @serenas.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Quite. We need to hear far less about Arday and far more about Nathan Cofnas and the agenda that led to this horrific campaign of hatred and harassment (and The Times own role in it, quite frankly)

@carolecadwalla.bsky.social is right (as usual, she's excellent) - we need to hear less about Arday and far more about Nathan Cofnas and the agenda that led to the mobbing and shaming of an imperfect but clearly talented man.

The age of centralised social media had us convinced that constant growth and the whole world in one big public square was the goal. In the end, that and monetization (and political weaponisation) led to the mess that Facebook and Twitter are now in. Bluesky needs to be viable, not massive.

Serena Snoad - Good Community @serenas.bsky.social · 12/08/2026
It's still too early to tell. IMO we're still seeing how web 3 and decentralised social media will develop I wonder if having millions and the whole world in one place may not be the best strategy (look at Facebook...)

Speaking as someone who's built communities online since 2008, I'm not worried yet. It's still early days for web 3.0 and decentralised social media. Having 'everyone' or 'millions' on one place may not be the best model. Viable and healthy is better than constantly growing.

This is a new era of midlife for me - becoming obsessed with the sweet mustard ketchup and pickle relish pots used in recent Gousto meals, then tracking down the supplier to order them direct. Tracklements have limited retail reach but a website to order direct. Success!

Definitely relatable. From what I understand, there's a strong chance a scarcity mindset and growing up without money leads to people feeling they need to keep everything, put aside broken items to fix, and grab a bargain when they can. Minimalism can't happen with a mindset of fear...
