Moving through the dense forest, I kept my hand on the hilt of my sword, prepared for whatever warped game Zyler had planned. After the storm last night and the near-constant breeze over the last few days, the air here felt still and heavy, unnaturally calm. Ominously so.

Aside from the calm, it was quiet. No animal sounds. No birds. No gentle rustle of leaves. The woods felt abandoned, as though every living creature had sensed the danger and fled long before I arrived. It felt like being in a void with only the sound of my breathing to keep me company.

K’oro touched her shoulder, drawing her eyes again. “And if anyone ever tries to hurt you, they will answer to me.”

For a moment Sadie stared at K’oro and finally she nodded in agreement. “Okay.”

When her eyes turned back to me, she looked so small, so vulnerable. I wished I could box her up somewhere safe where I could protect her from the world forever, the way no one ever protected me, but I also know that wasn’t reality. All I could do was offer her the truth and protect her to the best of my ability while still allowing her to breathe.

I laughed, probably too loud, but it was genuine. “You say that like you don’t spoil her every day.”

He grinned without an ounce of shame. Damn him. I couldn’t argue when he looked so absolutely… breathtakingly handsome. “In case you haven’t noticed, I don’t like many people. I take care of those I do. It’s that simple.”

Butterflies fluttered wildly in my stomach as I stared at him. Finally, I managed to nod instead of doing something crazy like kiss him. “Fine. You win,” I muttered with mock annoyance that he saw right through.

His answering full smile sent the butterflies in my stomach swarming.

The worst day of Ania’s life was when her beloved cousin Piren was dragged off to the floating towers of the Above to serve as a source to the Skyborn mages. The second worst day was when he was returned. Discarded. Drained of his magic and broken in spirit.

They’re enslaved, ridden so hard they break. Maybe it takes a year. Maybe it takes five. Maybe it only takes a couple of months.” He continued in a harsh whisper. “We live in constant fear that it’ll be one of us. If not one of us, someone we know. Someone we love. Their propaganda machine is turning our own people against us. You know they’re not even testing people to see if they have any magical talent now? They’re just rounding people up at random and carting them off Above. None of them come home, not the same way they left.”
