Learning about what a barrier to voting it is for young people not to have a "legally reproducible signature," and so grateful Minnesota doesn't do that in general.

My gods. Am I so glad I do not have to drive in Boston. I'm here for a conference at Tufts and my hotel has free loaner bikes. Everywhere I go is so much faster on bike than by car. Even my stupidly slow Marriott loaner bike. Except when I get lost.

Exciting news. I work with hundreds of Somali Minnesotan youth each year, and I've learned so much from them. I can't wait for more of their stories to be lifted up.

My papa in his prime cut off half his right index finger in shop and then went on to form the first teachers union in our small town that night in the early 1970s. He could take just about anyone in a fight.

For my first real job at a food safety consulting firm in St Louis, I went to Dillard's and bought business attire. The sales manager added "designated drinker" to my job duties. I went out with her to martini lunches with clients to match them drink for drink so she didn't have to.

Today UMN president calls the U's core value "providing an affordable, accessible education and our ongoing commitment to invest in the people who deliver that mission." She has the vision of a community college for the U. Or maybe a hospital administrator substituting "education" for "health care."

Autonomous cars would be more useful in rural and suburban areas where seniors who should no longer be driving have few options. Keep them out of the urban core. Ban them altogether in many dense areas.

No accountability for autonomous car companies. They can just program their cars to ignore traffic laws with impunity. No accountability for AI companies and their hacking a government. We are all screwed.

For the first time in my life, I find myself regretting having not filed an amicus brief. Would it have made a difference? Who knows. But to a greater or lesser extent, depending on the reasoning in the opinion that follows, this order has the potential to be very disruptive, and I didn't even try.
IT IS HEREBY ORDERED THAT:
1. The petition is granted to the extent it seeks a declaration and order that,
under Minn. Stat. § 201.225, the City of Oak Grove has the authority to determine
whether paper or electronic voter rosters are used at precincts within the City of Oak
Grove’s boundaries, and that the City of Oak Grove has chosen to use paper voter rosters
at precincts within its boundaries for the 2026 general election.
2. So as not to impair the orderly election process, this order is issued with
opinion to follow.

Fields Medalists speak out about the misuse of AI. This reminds me that chiseled on Northrop's walls at the UMN is the statement that we are "Ennobled by Understanding Dedicated to the Advancement of Learning and the Search for Truth" Mathandai.org
We are witnessing a general threat to intellectual work, with misalignment between the outcome of the use of AI and its initial purpose. In many fields and activities, years of training have traditionally served not only to produce a final answer or product, but also to develop understanding and the ability to formulate new questions and ideas. However, building on a vast body of previous human work, AI systems are becoming increasingly capable of producing the results of such work directly, and these goals cease to align. The issues the mathematical community faces now are similar to issues that other scientific and creative professions are facing, and indicate issues that all of humanity might face: how to make sure that, as AI changes the way work is done, we do not lose sight of what that work was meant to achieve in the first place

This is such an important discussion on the nature of teaching. I am not a formal educator but I mentor hundreds of teens and young adults each year. And adults for that matter. My biggest challenge is teaching the intellectual integrity part. We value when they say they don't know something.

Two clusters of lily pads float on gently rippling water, anchored amidst strong horizontal bands of light and shadow. The lily pads have subtle hues of deep magenta, olive green, and copper. Smooth, liquid distortion bends blue sky reflections and pale cloud highlights into wavy, abstract ribbons across the surface.

This is so funny to me because I have no idea what it means and all the proper nouns have different associations in my life. Pat Murphy is the chief clerk at the MN House and Cooper and Pratt are Minneapolis public schools. Although Cooper has been closed forever. Murphy is so generous with kids.

You know, I'd take the $50K over a 50% chance of winning $1 million. Neither would change my life much. More money doesn't give you a better life if you're already financially secure. And the idea that "Of course more money is better and anyone who doesn't think so is a sucker!" is weird to me.
