I wish I could like this thread twice. I love sync engines (Zero sync is an engineering marvel) but their association with localfirst is defanging the political ideals of the original manifesto. I'm glad they split the conf into two. We need a new label for overtly political local first software.

The local first movement has it on for relay first architectures where app data is stored and synced using commoditized relays. I particularly like how that fits with the municipal/soveirgn vision since it leaves more room for diversity of orgs in ownership.

That's a good point and lines up with my thinking/efforts. Muncipalites and states would probably get on board easily if professional and internal organizational tooling is the main sell. atproto's ecosystem of apps is good fit for this while also being an on-ramp for the more difficult network fx.

I've been thinking about this problem a lot the past year and I've come to the think communal computing are bedfellows with sovereign and municipal level ownership. These are established governance and organization systems with teeth and I'd think they can allow other lvls of diversity to flourish.

With @roomy.space every chat space could be on a different server, but doesn't has to be. It works a lot like an ATProto PDS! Each space has a DID, and can be migrated to other hosting just like an ATProto account. And you'll be able to seamlessly join different spaces on different servers.

I've seen this once before on that sub. An exciting project claiming to solve an exciting problem with a slick website and everything except the whole codebase and the website are prompted and what's worse, a chatbot was using the account in the comments to defend it. Bots let loose?

And also, human curation can actually work online. You just need a culture and system in place to enable it. A modern example is Telegram, which used to be my primary haunt for a few years there. Not perfect and I have so many words on this but its given me some strong opinions on what's optimal.

Human curation always beats algorithms on most metrics. Cost and ad incentives had eradicated it from most places that folks use that they don't appreciate it anymore.

I don't really know how to resolve all this. And I mean *all* this and not just the mania. This conflict predates AI as you put it, we were feeding ourselves to the grinder and writing slop for questionable ventures way before that.
