10.32 second email from father of eight year old author in three minutes.

It's now 10.30 am and I have received three more emails (8 for today) from self-published authors. One is a parent asking me to carry the books of his eight year old whose first book was written when he was six.

It's 9.01 am on Monday. Today, I have received 5 emails from self-published authors who want my store, in a town of 1200 people, to carry their books. Out of the 4M books published in the US per year, 3.4M are self-published authors.

Everywhere you go, there you are, in a suburb, and the doors of Cost Plus and Office Depot are open to welcome you.

We will end up seeing the US public execution, even though we don't want to. Our kids will end up seeing it. Clips will be EVERYWHERE & shared to troll people. It will be impossible not to see them at some point. This is from the people who insist our children need to be protected from literature.

The 'of course' and 'Thursday' and '1 o'clock' are so chilling. The ordinariness of a televised execution, brought to you by the folks who fear children's books where penguins have two daddies. Banality of evil at a new low.

I love these. Planning a trip to the OR coast next May.

The most American thing ever is that TN did not successfully kill a woman they want to kill because she killed and now she is in a place where jurisdiction (is it legal to turn off the vent to do the job??) and ethics (poor RNs and docs!) really highlight how barbaric our system is.

The twisted logic behind the violence in this country is intolerable.

SemiEmily @semiemily.bsky.social · 01/10/2026

Like I'm stupid, I want someone to explain to me the reasoning and ethics behind hospital transport to revive this woman they were trying to kill. How exactly does one parse acceptable and unacceptable terms of state-sanctioned killing? What about her condition NOW merits medical care?

Zoom in on the pictures. I'm impressed that this many dudes can give off actual lizard people vibes. And presumably these were the best photos they could take. In the rest, their human skin kept slipping off.

We live in a time where adult people who come to the store for a grown-ass not-cheap matcha latte do not understand what books (and ideas) are and how they come into being, nor do they understand the difference between public (libraries, free) entities and private (bookstores, pay).

Every year it happens; yesterday was 2026's time: Customer in bookstore: Did you write all these books? Me: Did I write...three thousand books? The ones with other people's names on them? CIB: Yes. The other annual-if-not-more-question: Are these free? Can we just take them?

If I recall, his claim to fame was being a virgin for some weirdly extended period of time and he got paid for playing football. This is like buying a carton of orange juice and being upset there's no milk inside.

Used to watch your videos and worry you'd get injured. Then a big hungry goat jerked me around last winter and I had back surgery to fix. Surgeon said, Load load load and deadlift, squat, at six weeks. I'm 100% recovered (very lucky). Wouldn't have even considered if you didn't post these.

Pelting rain, mountains hidden behind clouds in high desert Colorado. This used to be normal summer weather. Now we're in severe drought so it feels like the brief respite in an apocalyptic novel that makes you think things will be okay, but then...they aren't.

Everyone talks about how much smarter the scammers are getting. I don't know. I keep getting spammy emails that say a wealthy buyer with an MBA wants to invest in or buy bookstores and and I'm like LOLLLLLLLLL of course, the path to stratospheric wealth is paved with rural bookstores.

It's so bad. The gravitation toward Landman and country is tech nerds & finance guys who moved to Texas or WY to avoid state income tax. They seek identities in mythologies (and apparently find it). The Rocky Mountain West is becoming more liberal, and the country listeners are the historic ones.

I've been reading Edward Hoagland's "Notes from the Century Before: A Journal From British Columbia." Sixty years old now, it's not without problems but the central question, grounded in the people and place of Canadian wilderness--"How shall we live?"--feels so timely.

Steinem's 1963 "A Bunny's Tale," which I first read as a college freshman, changed my life. So, it *wasn't* okay for the debutante dads back in Texas to grope us and slip us the tongue? From her, I learned to read feminists, to understand patriarchal systems, to push back. TY to a foremother.
