Also check out another paper from the Selmer Lab in the same issue of NAR @narjournal.bsky.social Adrian and Maria managed to get the first high-resolution structure of RRF and EF-G on the 70S ribosomes. This is a key step in protein synthesis. doi.org/10.1093/nar/...

Structural characterization of ribosome recycling and fusidic acid inhibition in Staphylococcus aureus
Abstract. During bacterial ribosome recycling, 70S ribosomes are split into subunits by ribosome recycling factor (RRF) and elongation factor G (EF-G). The

Ribosomal RNA is modified at key locations. Not much happens when you remove them one by one, but what about removing them en masse around the catalytic center? The catalytic efficiency drops and the RNA forms misfolded conformations. Collaboration with the Remme Lab. @narjournal.bsky.social

23S rRNA modifications stimulate catalytic activity and prevent the formation of alternative structures
Abstract. Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) modifications cluster around the peptidyl transferase centre (PTC), the catalytic centre of the ribosome, yet their collecti

I’m happy to share our latest work, now available on bioRxiv, where we visualize RRF and EF-G together on the ribosome: Structural characterization of ribosome recycling and fusidic acid inhibition in Staphylococcus aureus. Many thanks to Adrián González López. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Mechanisms of fusidic acid resistance
Fusidic acid (FA) is an antibiotic used to treat staphylococcal infections, particularly Staphylococcus aureus. It acts by inhibiting protein synthesis through locking elongation factor G (EF-G) to th...
