This place is certainly (generally) better for my mental health, even if I sometimes have trouble finding stuff. I also get much more engagement than the other place when I post stuff for people to read or listen to, eg work related stuff. Not having to deal with trolls and hateful idiots a bonus

This guy seems to have borrowed Richie Hawtin’s haircut and then supersized it. Weird.

That looks massive… but also very tasty. Not too many bagel places here in Brizzle… and naturally none can match NYC.

True. I mean, the NCFC discourse on here is quite sane and good natured, but take a peek at FB and Xand there’s no doubt plenty of insanity and swivel-eyed idiocy. I mean, we do have some morons - see the “on the charge with Farage” NCFC stickers someone was whacking up at away games

I kind of get that, but if Attansio and co were breaking the rules like this and then covering it up/failing to assist an investigation, I’d be outraged and it would likely ruin my relationship with NCFC forever.

Aye. For the first 25 years of my life Citeh were bobbins and we all felt sorry for the “long suffering real football fans of Manchester”. Genuinely laughable and depressing how many current Citeh fans are willing to bury their heads in the sand and not call out their cheating owners

My memory of the mid to late 90s NCFC era was that it was extremely bleak - awful football, awful managers, crap results, grumpy fans. Really only improved (briefly) in the Worthington era… then we plummeted further. Bad times!

Why should most workers have to pay tax on their earnings while those at the top pay themselves in untaxed dividends and hide their wealth in “assets” which go untaxed? It’s hugely unfair and entrenches and widens inequality
010
Matt Anniss @sellbydave.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
No argument here. This is basically the point I was making. It is perfectly reasonable to tax inherited assets and wealth - and we should be taxing land, dividends, capital gains etc more too while those with them are alive. That’s also wealth that hasn’t been earned
310
Matt Anniss @sellbydave.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
To loads of people, any kind of inheritance - and the tax starts over 300,000 of assets, which is a significant figure - is a life-changing amount of money. In these cases it is *still* life changing *after tax* so what’s the issue?
120
Matt Anniss @sellbydave.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
The way I argue with these people is to say “if I inherited 400,000 and was taxed on some of that, it would still leave me with several hundred thousand pounds I didn’t previously have or earn. I’d be happy to pay the tax if I was that lucky”
120
Matt Anniss @sellbydave.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
You say that (and I agree) but I have met people who hate IHT because “the money that my parents uaed to buy this has already been taxed”. This argument ignores that the people inheriting it haven’t been taxed on it - it’s just free money. IHT is reasonable

Yeah, it’s awful. One of the numerous reasons I avoid TalkShite like the plague. If I’m going to have to listen to drivel about the same six football clubs and tedious fan phone-ins, at least on 5 Live there are no bloody gambling ads

Matt Anniss @sellbydave.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Well, it does highlight that to quite a lot of Tories - supposedly the party of “law and order” (ha) - perjurers, liars and charlatans are fine as long as they are “characters” who make a passable shepherd’s pie. Duly noted.

These are young people who are interested in music, so not associating radio with music is an inheriting one - I guess it shows how consumption has changed in recent decades (streaming rather than radio for example)

Matt Anniss @sellbydave.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
I’m involved in a youth project in Bristol where we are introducing 14-17 year olds to radio. One said they didn’t listen to radio much because “there are too many gambling ads”. Turns out their parents had TalkSport on a lot around the house, in the car etc

Well, at the core of this version of Conservatism appears to be a combination of survival of the fittest (ie richest) and the creation of a state that widens inequality and makes the already rich even richer. That’s all it ever comes down to: their wealth matters but nothing else does

They have their finger on the pulse in relation to their funders and current supporters, who generally think that anything that gets in the way of doing anything they like, whenever they like, to enrich themselves needs scrapping. At least they’re not pretending any more.

Or in the case of a relative’s in law, every demented opinion column in the Mail/Telegraph. She was once a pro EU one nation Tory - now a ranting extremist babbling on about “fighting age men” and “small boats”. Also defended Farage’s childhood antisemitism (“we all say stupid things when young”)

Well, my experience of Apple laptop keyboards is that I have a more pleasurable experience in the home office when I use a separate Bluetooth keyboard - specifically a very battered old Apple Magic Keyboard (or whatever they were called) - and stick the laptop on a stand to raise the screen

Well, my housemate’s cat does seem particularly interested in music. If I’m in the record room she usually pops in to hang out and sometimes sits by the decks listening intently. A secret DJ perhaps

My housemate (a committed socialist and cat owner) has long been convinced that all cats are Tories. His cat certainly orders me around and is never to be seen until she wants something, usually food. She also gets irate when ‘the help’ has food and she doesn’t, and moans more than RW weirdos on X

To be fair to them, they have a second, connected policy that also gets wheeled out relentlessly: using cuts to slash tax for the rich

Don’t get me wrong, at the time I really liked the Megabass ones - enough to buy a couple of the album. Introduced me to a lot of stuff that years down the line I ended up buying and playing. Those ones were done by the same people who did Jive Bunny I think.

I agree. I’ve thought for a long time that a history of electro (that also deals with its wider cultural impact and legacy) in book form is needed. It is great that this is something you have been doing so hopefully aomething can be worked out to allow you to finish it

Matt Anniss @sellbydave.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
What an absolute tool - it’s a whopping sentence but then he did actually blow something up! I refuse to pop over to X at any point, but I assume there will be a fair few foaming at the mouth douchebags railing against the jailing of a “freedom fighter” (or some such drivel)

Thank you. As I said in the piece, dance-influenced pop was my bridge, as well as hearing crossover dance hits on the radio. The other odd thing was those dreadful mega mix rexords - it intrigued me that music could be mixed together to create something new. Hence the pull of DJing

I’ll add that I hope you find a way of finishing it. Electro was so important and inspired so many - loads of stuff that happened a bit later has its roots there, or happened in part because electro came first. There’s a bit about it in Join The Future for that reason.

This is always the tough bit, unless you happen to either be rich or have secured a deal with a bigger publisher. In my case I part funded the research by writing pieces (and getting commissions) for features on things I wanted to look into as part of it. Took years, mind!

Thank you! Introspective is fasntastic too and much more grand in scale. It’s an interesting comparison to Disco in part because the updated dancefloor references signal the arrival and impact of house and the cultural moment the UK experienced around 88/89

Matt Anniss @sellbydave.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
A thousand times this. What inspired me to write my musical/cultural history was noticing things that didn’t add up in the most celebrated and well-known history of British dance music. Revising existing historical narratives is vital when the evidence doesn’t support them

Funny you should mention mixtapes. The first dj mix committed to tape I was happy with was a downtempo/chill out/ambient one. That went round bournemouth uni like wildfire in I guess 1997. I found the original tape recently but alas, I currently don’t have a working tape deck

Sadly I could only borrow them, but I did record them all so have them digitally somewhere. The radiophonix workshop, quite obviously electronic ones with weird names are always the best. One is just called ‘acid’ - lots of strange electronic noises. Hallucinatory!

Brilliant. Sound effects records and weird old comedy things (another LX obsession) became an obsession of mine a bit later. A friend of mine once found a box of BBC sound effects records (the internal, in house library ones) in a skip outside the Beeb building in Bristol. Some gems in there

I do remember it being a big story at the time - clearly not big enough. Maybe I noticed more being from Yorkshire and spending most of my childhood holidays in Scarborough. Still love the place, though it’s a few years since I was last there sadly
