Data sadist. High quality, high variance, galaxy-brained takes. Urbanism, rage against cruelty and inefficiency, scifi/fantasy, shoegaze, stats and programming. I live in Denver, say hi if you're on Ikon.

The one "parental estrangement" in my inlaws involves parents who are beginning stage Alzheimer's, a kid who is a high-functioning drunk, and just a fuckton of bad relationship management skills. The inciting incident was using the f-bomb on that sacred space, a golf course.

Segregated social spaces all go insane; they turn characteristic virtues up until they become pathologies. Care becomes recursive harm-processing, masculinity becomes domination jackass, academia becomes trivia for status. Every scene becomes a safe space for a turbo-anima(e) demon.

Every Republican running for election in 2028 should have ads up against them saying they could have impeached and convicted Trump and saved us from this mess and chose not to

A lot of people are calling my view that Ohio peasants shouldn't be allowed to leave their ancestral steel plant to move to a borough "feudalist", but I also support multi-generational tenancy rights for specific ethnicities by neighborhood.

EA, utilitarianism, and communism have some good ideas, but are just varieties of the same problem: not appreciating the limits of individual knowledge.

I don't really think paywalls worked. News could be funded by private rich person foundation money, or as extensions of in-person social organizations (like the old union newspapers)

The hugging face incident shows why humans use ambiguous communication. It was a mob behaviour.

Traditionally the way to get rid of a corrupt/brutal police force was to set up a second, concurrent police force to displace them and/or call in the militia against them

I don't want to sit at a desk I don't want to stand at a desk I want to be in a deep squat while doing focused work, but my chair rolls on its casters and facilities tells me not to stand on my chair like a goofball

There are many important political issues, you have to compromise with the body politic we have, and I'd crawl over glass to vote for W if he was running against Hitler.

The Noid has earned our support: - NB: not a moid, not a foid — a noid - I’d be on an anti-pizza jihad too if I lived in the ’90s. No DoorDash pho, BBQ, or tacos al pastor? Grim. - vinyl furry superhero suit: insane aura - just a weird little guy

This is funny because Kansas is both in between where I grew up (Ohio) and where I live now (Colorado), but also where my parents grew up. And I have not talked about rolly-pollys since I was 5.

Why do people like regular table grapes? Concord grapes are what grapes are supposed to taste like. The seeds are annoying, but thomcord grapes are seedless and almost as tasty, only packing the wonderful contrast of jeely interior and wet subskin layer.

Politics is a spectrum of how long you need to live somewhere before your voice counts. Tom doesn't think 9 months over 3 semesters is enough. NIMBYs don't think a few years is enough. The anti-immigrant chuds don't think 40 years and 2 generations is enough.

Here's my take: On urban streets, motorists should have absolute liability for any injury they cause with their vehicle. (Same goes for cyclists.) Pedestrians should have absolute right of way at all times. The norm would be that the street is a shared public space.

I don't really see much value in watching other people play sports, irrespective of their gender. The only exceptions being your kid playing or "I play in my local football club and I want to watch the really good players a few relegation levels up". Play sports yourself. Dance, make music.

George RR Mertin & his publisher should let 3 different writers finish ASOIAF and publish them separately. The story will be over and everyone can argue about which ending is their favorite instead of yelling at him.

to take an actual crack at this: requiring effort to access entertainment (set schedules, physical media, rare reruns, limited home access), often meant you proved yourself a fan by dint of the consumption itself, and I think that’s been replaced by toxic fandom to prove your bona fides.

I subscribe to Consumer Reports and I'd happily pay for 3 more services like this. How can I know if the linen pants use line or tow flax? What is the polyphenol level of this olive oil brand? The solution is a trusted middle man, and a consumer's union can do this.

I like feedback/echos as a model of suffering more than "2nd arrow" - someone shouts "you suck" and you hear it 3 or 8 times in echo. A shout of "a duck!" mutates into "you suck". A minute sound amplified into a long-standing feedback screech.

90% of covers are either "guy I tour dorm with an acoustic guitar" or the uncanny valley of near note-for-note reproduction. A good cover shows a band's essence once you subtract out the songwriting skill.
