Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 32mThis is everything you want in a cup final. An absolutely epic 90 minutes, ending at nil-all. So it's off to extra time we go... #SMBvMVC #AustraliaCup 010
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 2hDamn. Neither the Paramount nor 10Play apps want to work over a VPN. So we won't be watching the #AustraliaCup final. If anyone knows of another live stream (video or audio) please let me know... or just keep up the feed under the hashtag. 100
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 3hBit of a brutal shock for the @wallabies.bsky.social at Eden Park as the @allblacksofficial.bsky.social stroll away with a 50-19 win. Followed the match via the ABs live blog and it sounds like it would have been an absolute banger, played at pretty high intensity. #BledisloeCup 000
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 9hA nice aspect of being in the countryside is the low level of light pollution. On clear nights I can gaze up at the stars, and all the constellations are unfamiliar. No southern cross, no clearly obvious edge view of the galactic disc: a view I have always found a little disconcerting. 020
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 9hAnother excursion today to explore Lake Towada and the Towada shrine. A perfect autumn day weather wise so ideal for some gentle hiking. 110
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 12hUnderstandable given the weaker ¥, though probably why Japan is getting more inbound visitors. It's good to be doing full language immersion here though. 110
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 12h@lougo.bsky.social An interesting read and this mission luanches in just over a week! 010
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 12hI wonder if it's an English language thing. We're currently in Japan, attending a Japanese language school for a couple of weeks. We are the only Australian students, and there are others from Germany, Singapore, and the Americas (inc. the USA). 210

Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 08/10/2026Got the COVID booster a couple of weeks before we left for Japan. Not a sickness I'm keen to get again if I can avoid it. Apparently both Moderna and Pfizer have a combined flu/COVID vaccine that's highly effective. Tested, approved and released (though not in Australia yet). 110
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 08/10/2026We're currently in Japan and people are wearing masks as flu season is getting under way. Lucky I had my yearly booster a couple of months back. Last had the 'flu a few years ago and it was probably the sickest I've ever been, ended up with pneumonia which was horrendous. Coughed for weeks. 110

Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Melbourne did lockdown pretty hard. While across the Tasman they had full sports events and the like. A truly strange time that's almost hard to comprehend now. 000
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 07/10/2026When my stepmother passed last year, it was my half bro and sis that really wore the emotional toll. Being in another country it was a bit remote for me. Was a little different when my father went, as Melbourne was in lockdown and I couldn't go to NZ without 2 weeks quarantine. A strange time. 100

Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Started today with an excursion before class: harvesting rice (which the Akita prefecture is famous for). Rather nice to spend a couple of hours in a field gathering, bundling and stacking the golden harvest. 050
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 06/10/2026First full day of language classes yesterday: all conducted in 日本語. So very immersive and you have to start thinking "natively" so to speak. Got the standard school bento (rice, salmon, mushroom, umeboshi, etc) for lunch and made cha-han (チャーハン - fried rice) with brocolli and prawns for dinner. 070

Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Then back to do more home cooking. With a short detour via a post office to buy stamps to send postcards to my mum. Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 05/10/2026A full day today with language school orientation and first classes. Then a cultural excursion to a Buddhist temple for meditation and sutra copying. Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 04/10/2026First night cooking in an unfamiliar, Japanese kitchen. Made a home style classic, nikujaga (肉じゃが) - meat and potatoes, with rice and a couple of pickles. I could get used to using long chopsticks, where I'd normally use a wooden spoon. Tomorrow is the first day of language school! 140
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 04/10/2026Dined at a local izakaya last night and among the tsukemono (pickles) was Iburigakko (いぶりがっこ). This is a smoked daikon pickle that is a specialty of the Akita region. It is also a killer dish that I am definitely going to replicate at home, as I'm partial to both pickles and smoked dishes! 141

Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 03/10/2026The most moving piece in last year's exhibition was a Thousand Stitch Belt (千人針 - senninbari), gifted to Imperial army troops for protection. I'd read of them but actually seeing one and reading accounts from women who'd gone around collecting or contributing stitches really brought it to life. 010
Naked Ape @secretchimp.bsky.social · 02/10/2026We went to a textile exhibition in Tokyo last year, which was incredible. It showcased a range of things from huge sculptural constructions to common folk art. The pieces we saw yesterday showed how local variations in stitching patterns revealed where they were from. Quite incredible really. 120
