3 years ago our friends who moved back to the UK sold their car to us way below market. There were no rentals, no car shares at that time and it opened up sports to my wife. That car died at 293k and we’re back to #carfree. Keeping the sports but feel unburdened again. #yyc

I hear you but it doesn’t feel fair either. Have a throttle, don’t use it and bike is capped at original 30kph. Motor vehicle? It’s about how it’s used. Or at least that’s how we’ve been treating car drivers.

Had the most respectful conversation with a driver after I pointed out he blew through a red light and had a near miss with a scooter. He’d never seen the light or the other road user and was very apologetic and thankful. We both had a better day ❤️ #yycbike #wayaboveexpectation

I really believe car horns should be banned. In the last 15 years I’ve seen one single positive use of it. Mostly it’s just a crude button to voice frustration causing even more frustration. (Canadians use it to warn the other side when they can’t stop because of ice)

Car free is a conscious choice here with some trade offs. However, we can easily change our policies to offer choice and move away from car dependency being baked into everything we build. our car broke down hard this week and I’m considering going back to carshare, rentals and more cycling.

🙈 in advance…. Have you considered pihole? It requires a raspberry or NAS but it’s the only thing I’ve found that stops ads on our phones. Blocks all ads, not just YT. Don’t have Apple TV but I assume it would work as well.

I suggest using popularity routing on Garmin connect (account but no device required). It uses the heat map of where users go and has shown me neat routes. You’ll find it under training -> courses -> make your own. Click on start and end point and done. I believe strava has a similar feature.

In Calgary, I usually will take side roads voluntarily. Judging by Garmin heat map, so do others. Use an (illegal) Idaho stop and you have a nice, often shaded, treed avenue to cycle on with only one block diversion to actual destination. Add a modal filter and it would be unbeatable.

I grew up in a place where you only ring if the pedestrian is blocking the space you need. Otherwise you pass silently, even within one foot. My reaction to a bell or yell is to jump, even after a decade in Canada. It’s up to the person overtaking to do that safely and respectfully.

Also, didn’t it become a European rule to leave a wide gap for the emergency vehicles between both lanes by both drivers using the outside of their lanes during slow traffic? Helps for filtering too. (Yes, UK is not Europe but they voluntarily adopt a lot)

I wasn’t sure this would go, but managed to take all conference booth gear and 3 days of clothing with me for a trip to Ontario. Practical: the extendable handle was carrying the entire weight, not the main handle. Also, don’t put it on the side of your derailleur. 🤣 #yyc #yycbike.
