With the USAF withdrawing their planes from the Fairford base in the UK allied to their withdrawal from Iraq, US influence in the world diminishes while Iranian influence spreads in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Trump's son-in-law gets rich from the conflict he oversees. What a sorry mess this is!

That's a lovely thing to say, Aurea! Although I feel inhabited by one as I fumble for the other. An artist friend was asked if she felt her portrait had captured the spirit of her sitter. She replied, "I dunno. I'm just trying to get the eyes in the right place!" Artistry resides in process?

Mallard in the Loing. The ducks near the bridge at Grez-sur-Loing are so used to humans that they often approach to see what you have for them. #BlueSkyMonday #EastCoastKin #Photography
Close-up colour photograph of a female mallard dipping the tip of her bill into deep blue water. Her brown and black streaked feathers and amber eye are sharply detailed. Rings of ripples spread from the bill, a small swirl of green shows in the disturbed water beneath her, and her dark reflection lies below.

For me, the structure in the light on your face adds strength to the intensity of your gaze. The nudity seems almost incidental, which adds to the power that this image conveys. The result is both mysterious and beautiful.

The vaulted porch at the 12th-century Notre-Dame-et-Saint-Laurent church in Grez-sur-Loing #stunday #ClassicMono #ECK #ICM
Black and white photograph looking through a stone archway into a vaulted church porch, toward a dark doorway framed by carved columns and receding arches. The camera was rotated during the 3s exposure, so the stonework swirls in circular blurs around the still, dark door at the centre. A bright slab of sunlight lies across the floor in the foreground.

The bridge in Grez-sur-Loing has been painted so many times. I liked the play of sunlight under one of its arches. #BlueSkyArtShow #ClassicMono #ECK
Black and white photograph of a single arch of an old stone bridge over a river. The underside of the arch is in deep shadow, covered with rippling lines of sunlight reflected up from the water. A sunlit stone pier meets the dark river and its broken reflection shimmers below. Leaves frame the left edge.

I'm so sorry! What an incredibly heavy burden for you to have carried all this time, especially as sole carer. My mother suffered from dementia before she passed. Thankfully, she was in care. I hope the sale goes through quickly so you can start your new life! It sounds well deserved.

55-210mm sounds like fun. Today, we went to Grez-sur-Loing where there was an artists' open day. It has attracted artists since the 19th century. It has a 12 c. church, a famous bridge, and 12th c. castle. (will post pics!) Tomorrow, we're going to Paris for the "Cezanne et nous" exhibition. You?

Bonne question. C'est une photo de rue, prise dans l'espace public et sans aucune intention de nuire. Si l'une des personnes photographiées souhaite son retrait, je l'enlève immédiatement. Vous les connaissez peut-être ?

I don't remember his story. It was nearly 25 years ago. To get an idea of where we were, look for Jomson Airport on Google Maps. We trekked NE towards the Tibetan - now Chinese - border. We stopped at Chharka. We filmed in a village that was 5 days trek from the airport.

The first thing to understand about Dolpo is that there is no infrastructure. Distances between villages are measured in days walking, not kilometres. It took two days of trekking to reach the solitary monk. Maybe no more than 20km. He lived alone and I never learned what happened to his betrothed.

Thank YOU! It has been interesting and enjoyable chatting with you. I hope you enjoy the film. Let me know if you have a favourite section. Mine shows the women working the fields as their children tear around. The composer told me that he used this part as a hook for get started on the music.

The film is here: youtu.be/LpALjw5CRPk?... It was an extraordinary experience. I survived a night on the mountain because our Nepalese guide followed me after altitude sickness (4000m+) made me bolt down the side of the mountain just before sunset.

How can I have so few? That's a good question. I wonder if it is age related conservatism - note small "c" - kicking in. I have travelled quite a lot for work. Perhaps the most astonishing was a trip to Nepal in 2003. We spent 2 months in the Himalayas in a region called Dolpo.

21 cities before 19! That's quite a rootless start to life. That must makes sense of mongrel nationality. You sound like you've lived several lives already. BTW, I'm not sure I have a bucket list as such. Apart from Iceland, I'd love to discover rural Japan and return to India.

Good hashtag list! No worries! My profile already says that I live in France. It doesn't mention that I am English or that I used to be a cameraman. I'm guessing that you're on the west coast of the States because you price gear in $ and it's not yet midnight there! Could be Australia, too!

If you can, avoid the cheaper equivalents and try to get the latest versions. For video, these are the standards: 24-70mm and 70-200mm both f/2.8 and Mk2 are lighter and smaller that be Mk 1's. Plus the F/2.8 over the f/4, if possible. There should be equivalents in the Canon universe.
010
sebadee @sebadee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Yes, it's rare to geek out on gear with someone. I do envy Canon owners at times. It's a different universe to Sony's. Also, Iceland is dream is live to fulfil. I went in 1972 and would love to return.

I don't have a preference in terms of lens length. I prefer primes over zooms, though. They're lighter and faster. I have a huge camera bag for travel then a slingshot for going out with. For me, it's essential to work from a bag while standing. The slingshot takes my camera body plus 4 lenses.

sebadee @sebadee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
No, I started with Panasonic but was frustrated by their awful contrast detection autofocus. Sony's phase detection AF is other level! I switched from Panasonic MFT to Sony FF for my work as a TV cameraman. In documentary, we used the Sony FX9 primarily with the A7Siii or A7iv as a B-cam.
010
sebadee @sebadee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Most used lens? 50mm f/1.4 then Laowa 12mm. I also like my 70-200mm f/2.8. The 24-70mm f/2.8 is video only for me. I rarely use it for photos.
210
sebadee @sebadee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I recommend moving to FF if possible. Everything gets bigger, heavier and more expensive, though. I started with Panasonic GH4 then 5. Blown away by the improvement with FF! That said, I'm planning to get a crop body (A6700). It can take the same lenses and batteries as my FF bodies, too!

There are 3x 50´s in Sony's line up: • f/1.8 - cheap, light and no character • f/1.2 - utterly amazing bokeh but it costs a fortune and weighs a ton. • f/1.4 beautiful lens... sighs Completely understand the 100mm Macro being your preciousss! It must be delight to shoot with.
010
sebadee @sebadee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I'm guessing that you have APS-C which makes this an 18mm equivalent. I have 20mm which sadly fell from favour when the Laowa 12mm arrived. Sigma have a stellar reputation for producing lenses that match brand lenses for quality while costing half as much. I'm sure you'll really enjoy this lens.
110
sebadee @sebadee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Do you not find that each lens has its own character? That relationship just does not exist with those on the back of a phone. I have even be heard hissing "My Preciousssss!" when handling my 50mm f/1.4! Also, I buy 'used' when I can then return it if we don't get on well.
120
sebadee @sebadee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
For me, that's what it's all about: control. My Sony demands time, thought, experience and bucket loads of money. Also, phone cameras do heaps of post processing in order to deliver a social media friendly image. Most people have snapped the view, posted and pocketed their phone before I even....

sebadee @sebadee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I know that chicken well! The first Like locks the typos into the post. Books could be written about Poster's Remorse. Plus, I never knowingly leave leave a regret underthunk.

sebadee @sebadee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Thank you and yes. I now believe that that certain relationships have a toxic pathology at their core. Behaviours are learned that maintain the friendship. Then a situation occurs that forces these behaviours, and the feelings that underwrite them, to be exposed. An emotional tsunami follows.

sebadee @sebadee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
By the way, I found the 12mm really difficult at first. It is not a lens test delivers its strengths easily. It can be used for portraiture but is unforgiving if you don't stick to the rules. The subject must be dead centre with no one body part closer than any other. Plus, autofocus is a must!

sebadee @sebadee.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
That's my iPhone 14 Pro again. This was taken with the wide angle lens, a 13mm equivalent. I have a Laowa 12mm for my Sony A7v but didn't have it with me that day. Not expensive either. There's a 10mm too. The trick with water reflection shots to get the lens a close to surface as possible.

Thank you! I took this with my phone which makes me wonder why I often haul around a shoulder bag with a camera body, four lenses, filters and a spare battery followed by an hour of processing when I get home. This pic was taken and posted in two minutes!
