How does electoral turnover affect citizens' liberal democratic commitment? Supporting constraints on executive power costs little while one's own party is out

Liberal democratic commitment is real but conditional and weakens once one's party assumes power...The paper is here, comments welcome: ssrn.com/abstract=75673… (4/4).

Transfer of power changes this: after the election, Fidesz supporters come to value executive constraints more and majority rule less, while Tisza supporters move in the opposite direction, though Tisza supporters still remain more protective of liberal constraints than Fidesz (3/4)..

We find that before election, the incumbent and opposition camps differ sharply: while opposition supporters prioritize liberal constraints over majoritarian claims, incumbent supporters do not (2/4)....

🚨🚨 New working paper! What happens to citizens’ democratic priorities when power changes hands? We (w/ Natasha Wunsch) explore this by drawing on a three-wave panel survey and a repeated conjoint experiment fielded around Hungary’s April 2026 elections (1/4, link at the end)...

Your logo/map sends a message that scholars from Turkey are not welcome (or you just don't care). The "European" part of Russia (west of Urals) is in the map but not the European part of Turkey (Thrace). Also you've been careful to include Iceland (not an EU member) but not Cyprus (EU member).
