“Dutch people cycle an average of 2.6km each per day. If this pattern was replicated worldwide, annual carbon emissions would drop by 686 million tonnes.” #Dutch

Cycling like the Dutch would slash the world’s carbon footprint
If everybody cycled like the Dutch, we could offset the UK or Australia’s entire carbon footprint.

Seattle’s kid-friendly destinations often have a shortage of bike parking. For instance, 2 more cargo bikes were locked to a flimsy fence in the back.

The heaps of leaves are just getting bigger on NE 65th. @transportation.seattle.gov, can we proactively sweep these bike lanes? People shouldn’t have to file FIFI reports all fall/winter for this.

I often report these as a lack of “no parking” sign, it’s not perfect but it decreases people doing illegal parking by 80% (6 months later if/when a sign is added)

Continuing on one of my many threads on NE 65th st bike lane: heaps of leaves, glass bottles, 2 cars, 1 Amazon van… At what point do we decide this is time to fix this block of bike lane next to a light rail station and a block away from a high school?

On an empty train, it is quite manageable to bring my Tern HSD, but I feel bad blocking so much space. Whenever it starts to be crowded, it could be quite a challenge

🚲 🚊 🚲 - Family trip to the eastside yesterday. We did combine bike + light rail as both the origin and destination of the trip were about 10 minutes away from the stations. Really great way to go distance without taking the car, but always hard to find space for the bikes, especially the family bike

Weird timing on this traffic light in the Spring District: 1. left+straight for cars 2. pedestrian walk (no bike) 3. cars (no left) 4. bike signal (no peds but NTOR turns on) What purpose does it serve to separate bikes and pedestrians going straight?

I wonder where we are on the construction of the shared path on the I5 bridge (last time I went there I used the sidewalk, but that was a long time ago). Otherwise, 1st Ave NE is a sharrow bike route for now.

We just hit 1 million Fremont Bridge bike trips so far this year
Data through September 29. Sometime Monday evening (September 28), somebody rolled across the Fremont Bridge and registered the one millionth bike or scooter trip so far this year. The old bike counter display had both a daily count and a thermometer-style counter that filled up over the course of the year. That thermometer maxed out at one million. When the city first installed the counter with sponsorship from Cascade Bicycle Club, one million was seen as an aspirational number. Seattle just hit that figure before October. Last year, the bridge didn't reach the 1 million mark until mid-December.

This could be easily improved! Though if the report was made in the evening and the car was still at the same place in the morning (which happens a lot when residents park on the sidewalk, or blocking the daylighting zone), you could see a ticket on the windshield early in the morning.

An example of bad design in Bellevue. 👍 Leading pedestrian interval 👎 Without a “no turn on red,” this creates a dangerous conflict.

Friday: Last chance to take SDOT’s bike and scooter share survey
At Lime's Georgetown operations center. Their collection is missing the 8-speed pedal bike. Yes, I pointed this out to them. No, I did not sound cool doing it. SDOT's bike and scooter share survey closes tomorrow (September 25), so if you have ridden Lime then definitely share your thoughts. Take the survey (afterwards you can enter for a chance to win a $100 gift card of some kind). It shouldn't take much longer than 10 minutes and mostly involves checking boxes about how you use bike/scooter share and what you like or dislike about it.

The WAR ON WALKING has taken many forms around the world. It’s often as simple as how we signal who space is and isn’t for. Once our eyes are opened to all the ways we’ve prioritized cars over people, we can’t unsee it. Frustrating photo contributed by @stadsplanering.bsky.social. #WarOnWalking

I think this one on your picture is different as bikes cross the intersection as a road user and not on the crosswalk. I think this change the meaning of the stop sign as drivers are legally required to stop and yield to pedestrians and bicyclists using a crosswalk.

These stops signs on BG trail crossings at Blakely, Brooklyn Ave and so many other places are just a source of confusion for drivers…

Seattle Bike Dad 🚲 👨‍👧 @seattlebikedad.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Because Idaho stops are legal in Washington, this should basically be “yield to pedestrians and make sure drivers have time to stop before crossing the road.”

Seattle Bike Dad 🚲 👨‍👧 @seattlebikedad.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Probably controversial as I regularly see drivers not slowing down: for me, a stop sign positioned at a trail-crosswalk connection regulates entry onto the sidewalk, but it does not revoke cyclist/pedestrian's right-of-way when crossing the street. WDYT?

The fact that drivers don’t care when you call 911 or the non-emergency line in front of them tells you why it’s so important to have real protection for bike lanes.
