How far back does the groundwater monitoring record go?

It's been a long time, but I was able to do some of my own #FieldWork in a Sylt #SaltMarsh a couple weeks ago. We tried installing some dialysis chambers (the mud puddles) and did some of my usual porewater collection with ceramic-tipped single point samplers. #WomenInSTEM #PostDoc 👩‍🔬 #PoreWater #GHG
Landscape view of a grazed salt marsh showing a number of installed stick-like pore water sampling devices. There are high and low parts of the terrain, with the low parts filled with water. An up close view of installed pore water samplers in a patch of Spartina cordgrassA close up of the dialysis chamber installed, with some sticking out of the ground. They're meant for peatlands, so you are supposed to push them in, but we had to dig them in due to the sand underneath the salt marsh sediment.Taking a GPS measurement of one of the sampling spots in a Spartina patch. I use the Map Cam app, so I get a picture, can take notes, and a GPS point all encoded together.

After a couple days they're now clear with a crystalline precipitate. Has anyone ever seen this before? I also have had some samples go light orange, which is not normal either. I suspect the reagents are reacting to something in the samples. They're salt marsh porewater samples.

Hey #Science #Chemistry people, I had a weird reaction during methyl-blue photometric sulfide analysis. They started purple after reagents were added and reaction time had finished. I analyzed them, put them aside, and after maybe 10 minutes noticed they had turned fluorescent pink.

Listen up science people, if you go through the trouble of taking and reporting chemical data like ion analysis, iron concentrations, salinity, etc in your paper. STOP HIDING IT IN THE SUPPLEMENTAL AND NOT DISCUSSING IT, IT'S IMPORTANT INFORMATION. K, thanks.

I'm happy to announce that I started a new position at the #University of #Münster as a ( #Postdoc) #Researcher in the TRICMA2 project and have submitted my #doctoral #thesis! I know I've been quiet lately, but look forward to more field pics of porewater, this time from #Wadden #Sea salt #marshes!
I am standing with three black hardbound doctoral thesis books in my arms, with a generally neutral look on my face because apparently I couldn't smile normally.A zoomed in view of the cover of one copy of my black hardcover bound thesis, with three lines of text in silver:

Now would be a great time for #US #Scientists to look at positions abroad. It's fairly easy to bring and support dependents in #Germany if you have a job that requires a degree. I make enough with my #doctoral #candidate salary to support both me and my husband who isn't working. 👩‍🔬👩🏽‍🔬👩🏼‍🔬 #PhD

I don't understand how more people haven't heard that Oktoberfest in Munich isn't very much fun... I've been once because we were hostig someone who wanted to go. The Volksfest in Stuttgart is so much nicer and the Frühlingsfest in the spring is similar. Plus there are smaller ones everywhere.

One method of conservation and production is through #Paludiculture which is being tried at some test plots. Through demonstrations, they hope to show famers they can still use the land after rewetting and make money from it. You can already buy #Paludiculture products like paper and insulation.

It continues to lose 1 cm of peat per year. Rewetting and conservation efforts are very contentious as the farmers are worried about their livelihoods and don't understand. Many of them are decended from the original settlers, who were forced to be there and suffered greatly for several generations.

I also visited the Bayerisches Donaumoos (Bavarian Danube Moss) region, which has been impacted by heavy draining and use since the late 1700's. The pole in my previous post is the "Moospegel" a wooden beam hammered into the peat in 1836. The area has lost almost 3 meters of peat since then.

I attended and presented at the international Peatland Science Conference organized by the University of Applied Science of Weihenstephan-Triesdorf and the Peatland Science Center in Freising, Germany. It was a great conference and my last one as a doctoral candidate.
A 35-year old woman stands in front of a plot of Typha paludiculture. The Typha is full grown and has cattails.A view of a large field of Carex to be harvested in a few months for use in prodcuts. The field is a Paludiculture test plot.Image shows the title slide of a presentation entitled "Microbial community development during and after rewetting a coastal peatland". The lead and presenting author is Sara E Anthony, from the Universities of Rostock and Greifswald, and coauthors include Cordula Gutekunst, Dominik H. Zak, Klaus-Holger Knorr, Susanne Liebner, and Gerald Jurasinski. This picture was taken by Miaorun Wang. Funders listed include the DFG and the Joachim Herz Foundation. The so-called Moorpegel (in German) is a 2.9 meter tall wooden square beam that in 1836 was hammered into the peat at Königsmoos which is in the heart of the Donaumoos area in Bavaria, near Ingolstadt. This is a visual representation of how much peat has been lost since the pole was installed (almost 3 meters) and peat loss continues today at a rate of 1 cm a year.
