George Saunders provides thoughtful responses to questions on the purported usefulness of AI. Worth reading just for the relief that comes with someone else (someone smarter than me) taking on the labour of explaining why using one’s own brain is a good thing. on.substack.com/cp/218234700

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

As part of my learning journey through the Irish language, I subscribe to a handful of newsletters written as Gaeilge (such as the daily one from @sceal.bsky.social) -- just to see how much I can understand through quick skims. It's rare that I 'get' the context/substance this quickly:
'Aontas Eorpach ag oscailt an dorais do Cheanada'
Tá sé fógartha ag Uachtarán an Choimisiúin Eorpaigh Ursula von der Leyen go bhfuil an tAontas Eorpach "ag oscailt an dorais" do Cheanada agus ag tabhairt cuiridh don tír sin a bheith ina "ball comhlach" den Aontas.

Hilarious and deeply insightful writing by @brianphillips.lol.
Because the truth is, tech doesn't have an image problem. It doesn't have a message problem. It has an intention problem. What's wrong with the axe murderer who broke into my house is not that he hasn't successfully persuaded me to buy into his narrative. What's wrong is that he's trying to kill me with an axe. Similarly, when you launch a product that's designed to put millions of people out of work, block access to sources of verifiable truth, replace human creativity with slop, and lower the barriers to every sort of atrocity, the problem isn't that you haven't told the public a good story about those things. The problem is that you are trying to do them.

If there's a battle over device-based learning, it's between schools and families on one side and big tech on the other. Big tech spent decades selling schools and family on tech as a panacea. And schools/families now see--that promise was hollow. But it takes time and money to walk it all back.
