I was reminded today I'm meant to promote my poetry sequence here. It's just been published in a 2nd edition by Poetry Salzburg: www.poetrysalzburg.com/medea.htm It's about the vengeful rage of Medea whom no one listens to, and about political violence. So more relevant than when I wrote it, alas.
Hecate’s Song

Every man and woman is a world,
And the world is a man and a woman.
Every man and woman has a soul,
And the world’s soul is each man and woman.

Every animal is given grace, beauty of movement and body.
And every body’s movement has animal grace,
Even speech and murder, inventions of mankind.

You wonder, daughter, where your rage fits in.

It is a little window made of fire.
From your window you watch the world, in pain.
Your gaze passes by the mothers and the children
Playing in their orchards of innocence,
And the old folk dozing in the sun.

Let it turn to the rooms of blood and stone
Where your family’s story is written.
I am there already. I will meet you.

Since the internet has gone all Greek, here's my tuppence worth, from the lovely limited edition printed by Rum Do in Venice. #poetry #scottishpoets #writerscommunity #poetrylovers #greekmythology #medusa #sonnets
Caravaggio: Medusa

I never thought I'd find myself here:
sharing a platter with John the Baptist,
a novelty favour at a wedding feast
for some spoilt rich kid. Hero?

I beg to differ. Still, I'm quite the dowry:
since Athena saw fit to put a halt
to me and Poseidon (as if she'd never screwed on an altar!)
and gave me a face to make the boys cower,

I'm one of a kind, a collector's item.
Or I was. But even my severed head
is a loaded weapon, my dead
babies still writhe and rear to bite:

so place me on the top table for the big reveal,
drink down my hatred with your final meal.

This older poem was recently printed in a lovely limited edition by Rum Do Press in Venice. In memory of my grandfather, Calum Marshall.
Burial

This morning, thousands of geese are leaving Scotland.
Something in the air calls them
to roads they may no more resist
than our hair the wind’s invitation to dance.

On this hilltop where we bury you,
the chanter’s reed may no more resist
the breath that shakes it than our tears
the song the piper weaves:

Sail bonny boat
like a bird on the wing
over the sea to Skye.

The pipes, calloused and tender
as a midwife’s hands, laying bare
the seams of the heart, then
marrying them to the air.
