October is Women's History Month. During this month, we celebrate women from Canada's history who have helped shape the country. Today, it is Violet King.
She was the first Black woman lawyer in Canadian history, and the first Black person to graduate law school in Alberta and be admitted to the Alberta Bar.
During her law career, she represented clients in domestic violence cases.
She often spoke out about racial and gender equality in her career.
She then joined the Canadian Civil Service at Citizenship and Immigration.
Later in life, she took on executive roles with the YWCA and YMCA to help others find work.

French government in crisis talks after ‘colossal failure of the state’
Ministers, officials and police under pressure over response to days of violent unrest in cities across France The French government was in crisis talks on Sunday after one of the most violent days of unrest in years left public buildings burned, hundreds of shops destroyed and looted, and more than 2000 people arrested in cities across the country. Politicians on the left and right called for the resignation of the interior minister, Laurent Nuñez, after the government appeared to have been caught by surprise by the scale of violence as state buildings were stormed and torched, bus stops smashed, roads barricaded and shops broken into and destroyed. October is LGBTQ+ History Month. The month celebrates the achievements, history and civil rights movements of the LGBTQ+ community. Today, it is the story of Everett Klippert.
In 1965, he was charged, convicted and sentenced to four years in prison for gross indecency after police discovered he had consensual homosexual relations with four different men.
His case received national exposure after the Supreme Court denied his appeal. It played a major role in Canada decriminalizing homosexuality in 1969.
Klippert remained in prison until 1971 and lived a quiet life until his death.
In 2020, he was given a posthumous pardon.

Happy birthday to Rick Mercer, born on this day in 1969 in St. John's! An original castmember on This Hour Has 22 Minutes, he created the shows Made in Canada and Rick Mercer Report. He has won 18 Geminis, 12 Canadian Screen Awards and received 11 honorary degrees. 📸 CBC
### Image Description
A professional color headshot of Canadian comedian, TV host, and political satirist Rick Mercer, likely from the 2010s during his career peak with shows like *Rick Mercer Report*. Mercer, in his mid-50s, is captured in a direct, engaging close-up with a subtle, knowing half-smile and a confident, piercing gaze. He has fair skin, a strong jawline, and a full head of curly silver-gray hair. He wears a tailored black single-breasted suit jacket over a crisp white dress shirt, accented by a small, elegant white flower boutonniere on the lapel. The background is a clean, softly blurred neutral gray with subtle architectural lines suggesting an indoor studio or office setting, conveying a polished yet approachable vibe typical of media promotional portraits.

LGBTQ+ History Month poster highlighting an early AIDS case: left shows Gaetan Dugas standing by a lakeshore; right panel says:
"Gaëtan Dugas was an Air Canada flight attendant who contracted AIDS in the early-1980s.
He worked closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to identify his sexual partners by providing names and addresses. His help confirmed that AIDS was an infectious agent. Despite his efforts to help scientists understand the disease, he was falsely labelled Patient Zero and vilified in Randy Shilts’ 1987 book And the Band Played On. It is only recently that his legacy been re-examined."
