I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for graduate training fellowships from NSF and IES. My work depends on federal restricted data. This is absolutely devastating for future generations of researchers. I’m glad @agamoran.bsky.social is using his immense influence to fight back.

After a few months of using the online ADRF platform, I was dissatisfied and decided to migrate all my NCES restricted data work back to the cold room in November ‘24. Most universities should have cold rooms by now. We’re currently modernizing ours at CREO at Notre Dame.

Another titan of the field has fallen. As a sociologist of inequality, education, & neighborhoods, I am deeply indebted to Jencks. I met him once at a breakfast at Ruth Lopez Turley’s house in grad school at Wisconsin. What an amazing scholar and human being.

It was huge honor - and somewhat surreal - to give a demography seminar in the very room where @agamoran.bsky.social hooded me with my PhD and where I saw Heckman give a talk once in grad school.

Again, another day has gone by & the presidents of major research universities are deafeningly silent in the face of existential threats because of the potential end of federal funding. It's like watching the failure to stand up to Scott Walker & the Wisconsin GOP for a decade, on a national scale.

I'm heading back to Madison to give a seminar on a paper made possible by access to decades of restricted federal data that is increasingly under threat. Let's keep @dol.gov, Census, and @usedgov.bsky.social data accessible to researchers and the public alike!

As an undergrad sociology major at Berkeley, I was in awe of Burawoy. He was a mix of a folk hero and titan in the field. My passion for the discipline was honed by his theory class. So tragic. Hope he and Erik are reunited in power in Soc heaven. www.mercurynews.com/2025/02/04/o...

We must defend birthright citizenship for all. Under the proposed policy, I would be denied U.S. citizenship because my parents were undocumented. There would be one less Latino professor at an elite university and the nation would not be any safer. The 14th amendment is clear and unconditional.
