Didn’t realize you were local. I’m in Richfield and I would like us to have the same option to use these. Mpls seemed to be very deliberate in ensuring they were placed fairly and not concentrated in highly BIPOC areas. Seemed like a good balance.

The Penn Avenue rebuild came to City Council last night. Nothing is final until the layout is approved, but right now we are looking at: 1. Protected bike lanes (66th-style) 2. Street parking for Penn Central, 65 to 68 3. Ped refuge on most corners 4. Roundies at 75, 69, 64.

Led about 25 planners and engineers on a tour of Richfield and Bloomington this morning as part of @nacto.bsky.social ‘26. We took the Orange Line and toured 66th, Kirchbak Garden, Nicollet, Portland, MOA Transit Center and Bloomington Central Station.

Last night, the Richfield Transportation Commission discussed four bikeway concepts for Penn Avenue. Three will go forward for input. Option 1 is the "66th Street"-style. Option 2 (like Minnetonka Blvd) is a possibility alongside Option 3 (like Hennepin Ave uptown).

Richfield passed our legislative priorities last night, with the following addition from CM Walter Burk (approved 5-0). It is regrettable that it is a "policy position" that the federal government should follow the law and decades-long norms of law enforcement. But here we are.
Support federal legislation that requires officers
of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement
agency to
1) wear clothing that identifies them as ICE agents;
2) immediately identify themselves upon request;
3) inform state and local law enforcement about
    ICE activities in their jurisdictions; and
4) ensure that due process is followed whenever
    engaging with or apprehending someone.

Got a moment to share your ideas for Penn Avenue? Richfield could use your help! (And you're welcome to share your thoughts whether you live in Richfield or not.) This survey asks about preferences for bike lane design, on-street parking, and more. beheardhennepin.org/penn-avenue/...

Beautiful transformation of a suburban collector route in Northfield — streets that formerly had one-side sidewalk and nothing for bikes, now have sidewalks on both sides and a generous, two-way protected bike lane.

This is from the DFL constitution - were Fateh an endorsed candidate, Davis is a candidate running against a DFL-endorsed candidate. I understand that there's nuance with RCV but I have never heard anyone say this doesn't count in an RCV jurisdiction.

Sean Hayford Oleary @sdho.org · 21/08/2025
The rules aren't very closely followed, but in theory Davis's DFL-endorsed endorsers should have withdrawn their Davis endorsement, if there were a legitimate endorsement for Fateh. Without a mayoral endorsement, DFL electeds are free to support whoever they think would do the best job.

Doing a protected bike lane in only one direction is unusual, but in this case it's a way to improve safety for this particular problem of big car queues from parent dropoff. Currently the queue blocks the on-street lane, affecting kids biking to school.

Sean Hayford Oleary @sdho.org · 10/08/2025
Looking like some safer routes to school! This is the 70th St project (adding an EB protected bike lane and better sidewalk) and the 73rd St project (building a new trail from Bloomington to Old Cedar).

This KSTP article gives more specifics and the messaging was definitely favoring police abolition. I believe by August she had walked back an "abolish" statement significantly, so it makes sense police abolition advocates might feel less on her side than they did prior. kstp.com/kstp-news/to...

Nobody deserves that, and I'm sorry she experienced it. It seems fairly unlikely the person doing this vandalism was a Frey affiliate based on this, though?

Mandatory monument signs have gotten flak from legislators — an odd requirement for residential subdivisions that requires an HOA to maintain. Some of them are cooler looking than others, but this one in Eagan always gets me. How much did someone drop on this office park sign... $100k? More?

One thing I love doing for small clients is composing a simple brand page — I recommend this be publicly accessible so that partner organizations can easily look up a high-quality version of your logo / colors. lind-bohanon.org/website-logos/

Humboldt Greenway redevelopment area is a nice example of doing this even where a traditional grid was already in place - although it results in irregular lot sizes.
110
Sean Hayford Oleary @sdho.org · 20/07/2025
Although I'm a fan of a consistent grid, one of my favorite lessons from Tangletown is that even adding a *slight* bend to a straight street lets you do this really appealing visual terminus effect. Feels traffic calming and just looks nice, without losing connectivity.

This back garden has been my latest new area... About 90% native-to-MN perennials! And so far it's done fine with its winter role as driveway snow storage.

One of the most challenging, expensive places for a tree is the back yard of a relatively narrow lot with no alley — a pretty common situation in Richfield. If a mature tree dies there, you need an aerial crane to remove it piece by piece. Boulevard trees are much easier to manage.

Sean Hayford Oleary @sdho.org · 01/07/2025
Bloomington has a narrower right-of-way for Nicollet, so matching Richfield's design exactly (min. 79') would require at least another 6.5' from each side. Despite traffic volumes lower than the 2-lane Lyndale Ave in Minneapolis, Hennepin Co is insisting on a continuous 3-lane design.

Sean Hayford Oleary @sdho.org · 01/07/2025
Are you following the Nicollet Avenue project in Bloomington? The road will be rebuilt from American Blvd to 98th Street, and could continue the bike-ped-oriented design planned for Richfield in 2026. These are among the "ingredients" Bloomington and @hennepin.bsky.social are considering:
