I remember when I was a kid we were broke so occasionally I had to call home from a payphone, collect, and I would put my whole message where you were supposed to say your name. Like, "Hey dad I'm at the rink and I need a ride", but super fast so he could deny the collect call and come pick me up.

There is no such thing as the rugged individualist, that's a fiction made up by people tomweak to have empathy. Empathy and cooperation are what built humanity. Rugged individualists died in early human evolution. Without community humans are nothing, but somehow we've allowed the weakest to lead.
