Can clean steel compete without putting industry at a disadvantage? 🏭 New research across Brazil, China, India, the EU and UK finds that with the right policy design, governments can support investment in near-zero-emission steel while maintaining industrial competitiveness.

What will it take to get clean steel off the ground? 🏭 Clean (near-zero emission) ways of producing primary steel already exist. The problem is that they currently cost around 25–50% more than conventional production.

Could decarbonising steel be far more affordable than previously thought? 🏭 New research across Brazil, China, India, the EU and the UK finds that accelerating clean steel production could add only fractions of 1% to the price of everyday products.

The pace of the transition in any sector varies hugely across countries depending on the presence or absence of effective policies. It’s much easier to identify effective policies if you have the right paradigm for understanding the problem.

European natural gas prices keep on rising and have now more than doubled )+134%) in just four weeks from €29/MWh on 17 February to €67/MWh today. Geopolitical tensions and wars always drive up gas prices. That's not a bug in the system. It's a feature of fossil fuel dependence.

The biggest barrier to climate progress right now isn't the US, says Simon Sharpe at Chatham House, but distraction and disorganisation at national and international level. Why? Because there are plenty of steps that countries can take in purely national interest that leads to cutting emissions.

Climate action has a measurement problem. Warming metrics — such as the 1.5°C target — are difficult to measure year-to-year, and near-term emissions targets can lead to overemphasis on short-term easy fixes.
