Someday we’ll live in a world where there’s a system we can watch stuff on YouTube and actually scrobble it without it being hot garbage metadata that needs to be fixed. Google should be using LLMs to properly create song divides in Tiny Desk and KEXP videos.

Logged into LinkedIn to this amazing message. The audience for ScrobbleRadio is never going to be huge, but those that get what it's about, they thoroughly understand the hole it fills since they're probably like me, long suffering radio listeners who can finally scrobble their favourite stations.

Every morning, the start of my working day begins with me opening up ScrobbleRadio and hitting BBC 6 Music. I wanted to connect and thank you personally for what you do and the impact you have.

We can now see the effects of the changes lastfm made. After all the talk of taking their ball and going home, 19% left the platform, while accounting for ~60% of the API abuse. There’s still many users scrobbling impossible amounts of tracks, but they did get many of the biggest offenders to leave.

Highlighting BTS now having 19% less listeners and 60% less scrobbles. While still having scrobble counts that clearly dwarf any other act on the app.

This move by Spotify has me wondering if all the platforms are cracking down on the API abusers. Lastfm just moved first and now the other platforms are following suit tightening things up.

I think the key here is an app called BCD. Essentially they are gamifying scrobbling in that app, piggybacking off lastfm to track their listening. So users were given challenges or incentives within the app, so scrobbling 24/7 was normalized to reach daily goals.

It's a win for the community, since they were taking from us the whole time. The amount of time and bandwidth they wasted trying to validate their fandom was just silly. lastfm does gamify music listening, but they were the ones using exploits and cheats in online gaming, then mad they were caught.

aside from the abusers who'd send impossible amounts of daily scrobbles (3000). Everyone can still scrobble however they like, it's just the charts that are impacted, which to 99% of the userbase, nobody gives a shit about pumping numbers. And now the users who used the most API resources rage quit.

Abusers breaking the system for the whole music community mad that their abuses no longer have an effect. Online brigading has long been a thing, in the same way Plowy McPlowface will win an open poll. They just let this go on way too long. Ironically nothing actually changes for users
