Had my flu jab earlier and while I'm not getting the full elementary penguins singing hair krishna yet my head is definitely starting to do the backward guitars on I'm Only Sleeping.

My new play is on in Brighton. I'm performing one of the two roles. Running time 70 mins, so if you're coming from London you can get back the same evening. Or stay over. (I can remember when "a dirty weekend at the seaside" didn't refer to sewage in the water.) www.ticketsource.com/act/2nd-chan...

#Caturday Every day we set up a blanket bed for Jasper so he won't just park his arse where we sleep. We even go to the trouble of leaving a gentle incline just how he likes it. And every other day Jasper says "I blow my nose in your general direction".

Actually I'm here to tell you that Photos has lied to me. It's from Nov 18th. As you can tell from those trees. Still. Sky bread is sky bread.

I've advocated for a long time, on here and elsewhere, that there needs to be some third age pool of financial and intellectual resources that retired academics can put to good use for the benefit of all.

Then John Sebastian came on and the sun came out the minute he walked out on stage. Ask anyone who was there. Crazy when I think back now that this was just a year after Woodstock. He still gave off the same vibe you see in the film.

Eric Burdon and War finally kicked things off again. Burdon rain dripping down his face looked at the crowd and said you all must be crazy.... but that's ok I'm crazy too. War then proceeded to tear the roof off the place. None stop percussion heavy funk. No gaps between songs.

It pissed down with rain while Michael Chapman was on and the music was curtailed for over an hour. A lot of people drifted away. Many sheltered under trees or sheeting till the rain eased off and the music started again.

I hope everyone is enjoying this week's COTW as much as I am. Scott was of course agreeably crackers. Every time he mentions his spirit realm guru Koot Hoomi an image of Arthur Sultan forms in my head.

Had to go back and listen to those two movements from Scott's Oboe Concerto played at the end of y/days COTW. They are sublime. Shamefully the piece doesn't appear to be currently available anywhere on a commercial release.

Martin Amis wrote a really good review of Out when he was TV critic for The Observer. Some of his tv reviews have aged better than the novels.

Give me a good bit of British police procedural every time. From the Sweeney, Law and Order and Between The Lines onwards. It's one of the things we do best when we do it well.

Also for location shots in London and Manchester they can't be beat. Only 30 yrs ago but some spots are long gone. Those Kings Cross lock ups among them.

Started watching Prime Suspect again last night, right from ep 1. This and Cracker running pretty much in tandem were the highlights of British TV in the 90s for me. I'm aware that tv history only begins with The Wire and The Sopranos but these beautifully crafted antiques will do for me.

Our greenhouse ones are still going strong but the severe heat did for the cucumbers in there. Insufficient water meant they had armadillo skins and were unattractively dry and unjuicy. And the last rocket I tried growing in there just fried with insufficient shade.

What an excellent episode of COTW today. Cyril Scott's orientalism is right up there with Debussy. And how nice to hear Donald McLeod presenting without the hinderance of a guest expert who more often than not just stinks up the place.

October 1st and we still have an abundance of cherry tomatoes growing in the tub. And the cabbage whites and the bees love the lobelias.

I also apply this to music. I knew it instinctively when I was young and even more powerfully now but I've never felt the need to 'relate' to a song. 'Oh it's just what it's like when you fall in/fall out of love' etc. Nah. Songs create an other world to me, a 3 minute fiction I can walk about.

"This may come too much from the kind of writer I am, but I don’t think a straight line between who one is and what one writes is any virtue. A tanglesome path through dense woods, or a boxy maze — these seem more interesting to me". @tobylitt.bsky.social from A Writer's Diary. This gets my vote.

Just caught up with the last 20 mins of Cyril Scott from yesterday. Loved the bit in The Sad Pierrot where he goes a bit Bill Evans. Closewatchers will spot it. Mysticism today. I hope they do him justice. They used to go the full esoteric in those days.
