We, as humans, have the annoying tendency towards judging a species by their looks, and it would be far too typical for us to fall into this trap with the Giobhioni. With their diminutive size, green skin, large pointed ears and frighteningly pointed teeth, they have reminded more than one person of the goblins from popular fiction. It would be an incredible mistake to fall into the trap of thinking of them this way, a mistake that could lead to the misfortune of the individual, and the loss of a potent ally to the Commonwealth.

I’m sure by now, most people have heard of the frightening events that have taken place at Laszlo’s Reach. I am here today to address the Commonwealth, and assure everyone that the Fleet has been mobilized to address the hostile action taken by unknown forces upon our colony there. We will not stand by and allow this intolerable action against our citizens.

When the inquiry into what had befallen Bertha’s Bones on its final contract began, I took no joy at the idea that I might have to revoke Mr. Aacen’s certifications. He was one of the guild’s brightest minds, and even at that stage, had made quite a name for himself. And given his relationship with Boudya Mend’nasa, an equally promising member of the guild, such an action was likely to cause a fair amount of backlash.

I knew that Thomas really had no interest in the machinations of the corporate world of the Terran Commonwealth. Nor did he have any aspirations in becoming filthy, stinking rich. His only interest in life was putting his personal demons to rest, loving those he considered family, and doing what he could to stop the contagion. Oh, and to be hips deep in some engineering project.

I’ve been lucky to have been amongst the first to encounter the technology of a few previously undiscovered species.  The Mataeons, the Tamerjons, and the Dared’urns to name only a few; and that doesn’t even factor in the Giobhioni, the Keepers, or the Ktonshi.  Looking back, I might even consider the disastrous events surrounding Bertha’s Bones, and the later blackmail and marooning, as a balancing out of that luck.

Frankly, I was ready to toss my sister out of what the giobhioni called the A.C.B. (atmospheric containment barrier) when she issued that challenge. I certainly couldn’t understand why any of Thomas’s partners were acting so blase about such a bet when he clearly wasn’t. Hell, I had been tempted to walk right into the captain’s ready room and rip her a new one for ignoring his obvious discomfort about the situation.
