Honestly, if DF's writing team hadn't spent so much time massacring other popular characters in a weird, cringy attempt to make Ebyssian look better, I don't think he'd get nearly as much criticism. Dude's awesome. He's the half the reason I made my Black Dragonflight Dracthyr Horde.

The more time that passes, the more I'm starting to feel like the future of retail WoW may lie in doing away with MSQ shit entirely and going back to an almost Vanilla-era model of small side plots and random quests, with occasional overlap and a random Big Dickhead Boss Monster stirring shit up.

The fact that modern WoW's marketing is increasingly built on nostalgia-sploitation also sends a message to fans that WoW's best days are behind it. Joy can be found only in dredging up the past to relive fond memories.

It was mostly theatrics though. Metzen's position had limited power, and he wasn't the same person he'd been 20 years ago. His passions and interests had changed.

A few key people were let go (eventually), the rest were reshuffled, and business continued as usual. They eventually tempted Metzen back, hoping they could squeeze the last few drops of magic out of WoW's biggest hype man to re-consecrare the franchise.

SL SHOULD have been a wake-up call. Losing so much of their player base to their biggest rival, amidst a storm of controversy, disgust and scandal, should have forced some serious self-reflection. But corporations, especially Blizzard, don't work like that.

Many of the people guiding the franchise had no real respect or consideration for the players, and no desire to learn or understand why they were increasingly dissatisfied with WoW's storytelling, and Blizzard's games overall. Any attempt to enlighten them was shut down.

Some left during the early days of of the Blizzard/Activision merger. Others drifted away in the years to come, fed-up and burned out by Kotick's rampant mismanagement of the company. Eventually even Metzen, the man who ostensibly invented modern WarCraft, decided he'd had enough and bailed.

For all their problematic writing choices however, one thing the original WoW team understood was what made WoW work, what their players loved about it, and what kind of stories kept them excited and engaged. Most of those people are gone now.
