I was rooting for you @jleiper.bsky.social. Rural communities should "get that they deserve" or get what their contributing tax base can afford? I fear getting what they "deserve" means funneling yet more funds away from the major tax base downtown while we're left suffering the consequences.

Leiper promises to give rural residents ‘stronger voice’ if elected mayor of Ottawa
Mayoral candidate Jeff Leiper is pledging to give rural communities a “stronger voice” at Ottawa City Hall if he is elected mayor on Oct. 26.

You're the only mayoral candidate committing to hamstring the City's finances for generations to come. Why pay the money to fix my leaking roof when I can just not and then pay more down the road to fix the damage the leaking roof caused, too?

Jeff, you may be thinking of the pileated woodpecker being the larger one? There is also the hairy woodpecker, which can be misidentified as a downy and vice versa.

The apples to apples argument would be if a gun accidentally went off and killed someone. There was no intent to harm anyone. I just hate when I see crazies on the right make ridiculous arguments that aren't comparable. I try to hold those who I agree with to account.

You can't blanket every time a human is killed by another human and call it first degree murder. Come on.

Scott Clement @scottyclement.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
I'm not minimizing anything. I just don't see value in making arguments and comparing apples to oranges. It doesn't hold weight. If the argument was someone ran over these cyclists on PURPOSE, the argument would now be apples to apples. There are varying degrees of murder and manslaughter.

I'm all for framing cars and drivers in the light they deserve, but this comparison is not apples to apples. Your described two scenarios of murder. A hit and run in a vehicle, unless intentional, is manslaughter.

I love having the Ironman in Ottawa, and think it's great hosting the finish line in Major's Hill Park, but it's been done for 9 days now and the @ncc-ccn.gc.ca hasn't made the slightest effort to fix the grass. Huge areas are unusable for the crowds who gather on nice evenings. What's the holdup?

Up until 2005 Canada had restrictions on how much the pension funds could invest in foreign assets. Once these restrictions were lifted, the pension funds began investing heavily in the US - including their fossil fuel industry.

Scott Clement @scottyclement.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
Without even touching Canadian fossil fuel investment, we could mandate that Canadian pension funds reshore their billions from US fossil fuel investments into Canadian clean energy projects.

Scott Clement @scottyclement.bsky.social · 22/07/2026
The Canadian Pension Plan has $400 billion invested in the US, but only $100 billion in Canada. Not to mention all of our other massive pension funds. Time to start mandating a higher ratio of investment in Canada. The Aussies do it.

Stop capitulating to Trump. Every time he does this, we've given up our leverage and have got NOTHING in return. I'm beginning to lose the immense respect I had for you every time we back down. I can't stand Ford, but he's got the right idea.

It's time for Alberta and Saskatchewan to join the other provinces with the ban. Or will they gladly accept the 50% tariff without a retaliation?

Not to mention, Canada's coniferous boreal forest is much more prone to wildfires than much of the American deciduous forests. Types of woodlands plays a huge role.

And I'm not defending the 17X increase in NBA Finals tickets, I'm just saying that ignoring the demand side of economics when trying to figure out why prices have increased gives you half the picture. If demand cratered, and they couldn't sell out the arena at $67 per ticket, they'd reduce prices...

Unfortunately your favourite bakery is more of an outlier than the norm. Most businesses that operate in a capitalistic society fall into supply and demand operations and will see some sort of price increase if there's exorbitant demand.

Scott Clement @scottyclement.bsky.social · 09/06/2026
Keep in mind there are also 100 million more Americans since 1989 and the arenas are no larger.

Quebec quadrupling their cameras should make for a fun case study comparison to Ontario in which Ford won't comprehend.

Canada switches to a summer blend of gasoline which is more expensive than winter blend. We do this in April. Did you take into consideration that much of the US did not switch to a costlier blend in April? I'm not necessarily disagreeing with you, but it's a data point that needs to be considered.

Unfortunately, Council knows this and will do nothing about it. The few councilors who want to see change, don't seem to have any power, and Council as a whole is inept at running a G7 capital. Most councilors are better suited for a Pembroke-type town.

Is this post suggesting this lot *shouldn't* be developed into a residential tower? Obviously density is key in all areas, but isn't it a good thing this property owner wants to develop it, putting aside how you may feel about the design?
