Feeling very lucky to have seen this rare visitor here in southwest BC. The #BuffBreastedSandpiper nests in the high arctic & heads south in the fall to parts of South America. Its migratory path usually goes through central North America, but for some reason this individual took a western route. 🪶🌿
A medium-sized, plover-like shorebird with face and underparts warmly buff in colour. It has a small head, black eye and a short, straight, black bill. Legs are bright yellow-ochre. Its buff flanks and belly contrast with wings showing a scale-like pattern with brown feathers edged in white. @atlanticbirding.bsky.social selected the day's bird theme as #Parenting and it's still barely Sunday here on the west coast of Canada, so I'm squeezing in a #BirdOfTheDay image from a few weeks ago with a young #AmericanRobin being fed a juicy blackberry by its parent. 🪶

I was quite pleased to find this unusual #butterfly (to me) on a short, high-elevation hike with the grandkids a few days ago. The Rocky Mountain parnassian can often be found in alpine and subalpine meadows of its namesake and, in this case, Cascade Mountains further west. #BugSky #Lepidoptera 🌿

This cutie still has its white snowshoes! The #SnowshoeHare is hiding in trail-side brush at the end of June in the local mountains. Its fur turns white during the winter and brown during the summer. Its name is from the large size of its hind feet which help keep it from sinking in deep snow. 🐇 🌿

The #ChippingSparrow is a songbird found throughout North America in the summer. The term “songbird” is used loosely here because its song is generally a uniform one-pitch trill. Its call is usually a sharp "chip" and according to Cornell's Birds of the World, gives the bird its English name. 🪶 🌿
