Day 8 of #31DaysOfGraves - Animal This is the lion at the foot a medieval knight's effigy located inside the early 19thC Ceres Church, Fife. The recumbent figure is in superb condition, having been discovered buried nearby. It offers a wonderful insight into the lost medieval church on this site.

Two carved armoured feet are using it as a footrest. This image shows the rear side of the carved stone lion, its head and shoulders covered in a luxurious mane.An image of the entire recumbent medieval knight, wearing armour and holding his hands clasped in prayer, both feet resting on the lion.

#31DaysOfGraves #Animal In the Loch Lomond-side parish of Luss, the churchyard sports a hogback stone. It's thought this style of grave marker was intended to resemble a Viking-style longhouse. More info about it at tinyurl.com/4363j3rz

A very personal one from me today for #31DaysOfGraves. I visited my great-great uncle Bernard’s, and his wife Julia’s grave in the Eastlands Cemetery, Galashiels, which is close to where they lived (their former home was only a couple of streets away). My dad has always spoken fondly of him. ❤️
Headstone with a large stone cross. Engraved on the centre of the cross is a monogram. The inscription on the grave reads: “In loving memory of Julia O’Hara, dearly beloved wife of Bernard McLaughlin, who died 16th January 1946, also Bernard McLaughlin who died 21st June 1977.”

#31DaysOfGraves #Home My father's parents moved the family to Skye in 1930 from the island of North Uist. They built a new house and it was the family home until the last occupant passed away. Trumpan Cemetery is their final resting place. It's a special place for me.
A pale brown gravestone set in a grassy cemetery has the inscription "In loving memory of our parents Donald MacLeod died 11.7.1940 aged 79 years and his wife Christina MacQuien died 5.7.1952 aged 81 years 2 Ardmore".Under a blue sky of puffy white clouds sits the roofless ruin of a stone-built church with only one gable remaining, photographed side on. It is the backdrop of this picture of a graveyard with eight well-spaced headstones, some of them dotted with lichen and moss.

#31daysofgraves - Day 7 - home. Dad and I visited Kincardine O'Neil, in Aboyn, Aberdeenshire Scotland. This was "home" for my 4x great-grandparents William Calder and Jane Forbes, whose sons emigrated to NZ. The kirkyard was full of Calder and Forbes headstones, so we knew we had the right place!
This photo captures a man and a woman standing close together and smiling in a grassy graveyard in front of the stone ruins of a church gable under an overcast, cloudy sky.
They are standing slightly to the left of the frame. The man is wearing a brown t-shirt, dark pants, a tweed cap, and sunglasses, while the woman wears a black long-sleeved shirt and dark pants. The ancient, weathered stone wall behind them features a prominent triangular gable with a large arched window opening and a smaller slit window to its right. Numerous gray stone tombstones of varying shapes and sizes are scattered across the uneven green grass in the foreground and to the right.

Irving's remains were returned to Edinburgh for burial in 1881 and the cross was raised above him. An account of his life, death and rediscovery was carved above the scene depicting his first funeral, carried out by his shipmates, showing HMS Terror and HMS Erebus trapped in the pack ice behind.
Carved scene depicting two sailing ships (HMS Erebus and HMS Terror) trapped in pack ice, with a party of sailors in winter clothing performing a funeral on a rocky shore in the foreground. The image shows a large Celtic cross in a graveyard filled with gravestones. At the base of the cross are piled a number of roughly hewn stones, above which is the carved scene shown in the previous image. On the shaft of the cross is carved an inscription detailing the life and death of Lt John Irving and an account of the discovery of his body, decades after the last sighting of the Franklin Expedition.
