i didn’t even know what was happening the first time i witnessed it. i thought it was end times and had to look it up. the bird’s collective sudden displacement of air is called a ‘murmuration roar’ and the shockwave is one of the loudest sounds in the animal kingdom

there are hundreds, maybe thousands of mostly black birds staging themselves for migration in the two big oak trees next door. the trees look alive with movement and the noise is distracting. once pressure drops from upcoming storms they’ll all leave at once and it sounds like a jet engine roaring

in a clear cup setup you can watch the root system develop. it’s reassuring and removes the guesswork whether things are on track underground during the weeks/months where things above ground change very little, or not at all
