Like Japanese is (from the perspective of an English speaker) an incredibly infuriating language because even if you have an excellent grasp of the grammar you might not know how to use it because so much of it is optional. I have more confidence in my French and German grammar than my Japanese…

I read a ton of Japanese but virtually never speak it because I have no friends and academia is English (I speak more German than Japanese in a given year lol) so my speaking ability is actually in the doldrums, whenever people speak to me in Japanese and I can’t respond properly I get so 1/2
