update on this: i’m messing around with self-hosting n8n, and…it’s automation. one day i will investigate why so much of what gets slapped with an “AI” label is just automation with a chat interface instead of drag n drop nodes.

on a more positive note: it’s apple season, and i have discovered Somerset apples. I recommend 200% for making apple pie filling, they have the right balance of crispness, juiciness, tartness, and sweetness, to carry the flavor by themselves. Also, they are MASSIVE, the slices are fun to eat.

a clarification, since I’m realizing this may be confusing: this reply rate is for something like randomly calling numbers for a national survey. Imagine you just pull out a national phone book & call one by one until you get enough ppl to talk to you. Think about the sheer randomness of that.

Another reflection I have on the job hunt: Looking at the numbers of responses to applications, the rates look pretty low, about 5-10%. That is concerning, because that is the rate you expect from sending out a survey to a randomized population. Not a targeted one where you craft and personalize it.

My weird AI take: i hope it transitions from a world burning generative tool, to a personalized streamlining enablement process. Using AI to make an image is silly and bad. Using it to run an analysis on some data makes way more sense, and should not use nearly as much energy.

maybe along with talking about ethics, we need to start talking about accountability in design. Because I don’t think enough people expect to actually be held to task for their work & decisions in a substantial way. Meanwhile, people in other professions work with that as an assumption.

i am not advocating for ghost, bc i am still trying it myself. But I WILL advocate for understanding how payments work for your business, and having as much control over it as possible, even if it’s a pita. getting more hands-on with your setup allows you to customize, bc THIS is the alternative

Get the hell off Substack before you literally can’t anymore without blowing up your business

With Substack's latest launch, writers are actually ceding control of the billing relationship to Apple, which now owns and controls the subscription.
These transactions, subscriptions, and customers will no longer be accessible in their Stripe account.

Most importantly, that means that if writers choose to leave Substack, they won't be able to port their paid subscriptions over to another platform like they could previously. This predatory platform lock-in is incredibly dangerous for writers. It strips away data and control, while locking them into the platform.
