Just accepted: Cognitive Bias in Large Language Models: A Vindicatory Approach – David Thorstad Abstract in alt text or read it here: www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/... #philsci #philsky
ABSTRACT. Recent studies allege that large language models (LLMs) exhibit a range of cognitive biases familiar from human cognition. I argue that the case for many biases is weaker than it may appear. Using case studies of knowledge effects in the Wason selection task, availability bias in relation extraction, and anchoring bias in code generation, I show how a range of vindicatory strategies traditionally used to vindicate apparent biases in humans can be used to push back against allegations of bias in LLMs. I discuss implications for the role of cognitive bias in evaluating LLM performance, the rationality of human cognition, and future work on cognitive bias in LLMs.

Models of science focus on how scientific agents/activities reach solutions or produce discoveries. I think this is why they're often so useless at actually explaining how science does what it does. We need to understand how science generates problems because that's exactly where it excels.

From the latest issue: Are We in a Sixth Mass Extinction? The Challenges of Answering and Value of Asking – Federica Bocchi, Alisa Bokulich, Leticia Castillo Brache, Gloria Grand-Pierre & Aja Watkins Abstract in alt text or read it here: www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/abs/10.1... #philsci #philsky
ABSTRACT. Although the urgency of our present environmental crises is not in doubt, claims that we are in the midst of a sixth mass extinction are highly controversial. Our aims here are, first, to shed philosophical light on this scientific debate—the many conceptual and methodological challenges involved in answering this scientific question—and, second, to offer new perspectives on what the value of asking this question has been, and if that value persists. We argue that a straightforward answer to the question of whether we are experiencing a mass extinction is undermined by the challenges in defining ‘mass extinction’, uncertainties in past and present diversity assessments, and data incommensurabilities. Further, an excessive focus on the mass extinction framing can be unhelpful to conservation efforts, leading us to miss out on the many other valuable insights that Earth’s deep time can offer in guiding our future.

Xu Lu & Lingxuan Wu provide new micro evidence that depositor inattention affects banks’ deposit pricing & interest rate risk. Banks serving more inattentive depositors set lower deposit rates, have lower deposit betas, & weaker outflows when the policy rate rises. cepr.org/voxeu/column... #EconSky
In each year, US banks are ranked by their deposit-weighted inattention measure and grouped into quartiles. For each quartile, the authors compute the average savings deposit rate as interest expense on savings deposits divided by savings deposits using US Call Reports, 2007-2021. The figure plots four-quarter moving averages for the top quartile (more inattentive depositors; blue dashed line) and the bottom quartile (more attentive depositors; orange solid line).

Deposits are US banks’ primary funding source, but they can also add to interest rate risk. This column presents new micro evidence that depositor inattention affects banks’ deposit pricing and interest rate risk. Depositors manage their accounts infrequently, and balance adjustments occur at different speeds for different income sources. Banks serving more inattentive depositors set lower deposit rates, have lower deposit betas, and weaker outflows when the policy rate rises. Ultimately, the ability of the deposit franchise to cushion or amplify banks’ interest rate risk depends on the level of the policy rate and on depositor inattention.
